Vin Cullen assumed the managerial reigns of the Brakettes in 1957, replacing Bernie Kaplan who had directed the team for their first ten years. Kaplan compiled a 287-66 record with seven regional titles and as many National Girls' Softball League titles.
In 1957, the Brakettes successfully defended both their league and regional championships en route to a 39-5 record.
In the World Tournament, which was staged in Buena Park, CA, the Brakettes finished seventh, losing 1-0 games to both host Buena Park Lynx and Orange, CA, Lionettes. Pitcher Bertha Ragan captured first-team All-America honors. She twirled no-hitters at Indianapolis and Houston before losing to her former team, Orange, CA.
Ragan had a 22-1 record. She allowed just one hit in the loss to Buena Park. Twenty of her wins were shutouts. Joyce posted an 11-1 record with four no-hitters and eight shutouts. Mary Hartman of New London, CT, won the batting title with a .388 average. She also led the team in runs scored, hits, RBI, doubles and home runs. |
