Brakettes Beat the Elite 5-0, as Storms Cause Cancellation of Game 2

June 14, 2008 - The Stratford Brakettes defeated the New Jersey Elite 5-0 Saturday night at DeLuca HOF Field, riding a strong pitching performance by Bailey Sanders, before storms forced the second game to be called off. Sanders struck out six, while giving up just one hit, to improve to 3-0 on the year.

Jess Mouse smashed the first of her two doubles with one out in the second inning, and scored the Brakettes’ first run. She came home from second on Ashley Waters’ RBI single.

The Brakettes picked up their second run in the next inning, when Denise Denis led off with a single up the middle. Jess Serio put down a sacrifice bunt to push Denis up 60 feet. Laura Trout picked up an RBI, as her two-out single allowed Denis to score.

Trout drove another run home in the fifth, scoring Serio from third. Serio had reached on a walk, and moved up to third on a base hit by Jenna Lopez.

The lead stood at 3-0 until the home sixth, when Mouse reached on an error. Amber Radomski laid down a sacrifice bunt, but reached base safely as the throw to first base sailed into right field. Mouse moved to third, as Radomski advanced to second. Waters hit a fly ball out to right, deep enough to allow Mouse to tag for the fourth run. Radomski scored from second on Serio’s single, and the lead was pushed to 5-0.

Sanders retired the side in order in the top of the seventh, and the Brakettes improved to 10-0 with the win.

The second game was cancelled after previously light rains increased, and lightning was visible in all directions. The weather delayed the return of Olympic Gold Medalist Danielle Henderson to the Brakettes, as she will have to wait another day to make her 2008 debut. Henderson is beginning her third stint with the team, having won national championships with the Brakettes in 2002 and 2003.

The Brakettes and New Jersey Elite will be matched up again on Sunday afternoon at 1:00, with both games being broadcast live, right here at www.brakettes.com
