Brakettes Blaze to 18-0 Start With Sweep of Outten

June 22, 2008 - The Stratford Brakettes defeated the Outten (PA) Trailblazers by 8-0 and 12-0 scores Sunday at DeLuca, as Leslie Malerich put her name in the franchise's record book. Malerich threw her third straight five-inning perfect game in the encore, striking out 13 along the way.

Malerich has struck out 39 batters in her last three starts in just 15 innings. Going back to the home opener against the Stratford Seahawks on June 12th, Malerich now has a streak of 23-plus perfect innings. The three-game perfect streak ties the Brakettes’ all-time record of consecutive perfect games, as she matches the mark set by Kathy Arendsen, Lisa Fernandez, and Michelle Collins.

The Brakettes provided their pitchers with runs in bunches, scoring a total of 20 runs on 21 hits. Stratford put up five in the first inning of the matinee, and three in the fourth. Jess Serio and Whitney Mollica smashed homers in the second game, as the Brakettes scored four in the second inning, and eight in the following frame.

Ashley Waters drove home the first three runs with a bases-clearing double in the first, and she scored on an RBI single by Amber Radomski. Jill Cimminello followed with an RBI double to put the Brakettes up 5-0.

Jess Mouse singled with the bases loaded in the fourth, scoring Denise Denis and Laura Trout. Waters added a single to score Mandie Fishback, giving the Brakettes an 8-0 lead.

Bailey Sanders retired the side in the fifth, improving to 5-0 for the season. She had five strikeouts, and scattered three singles.

The Brakettes took an early 1-0 lead in the late game when Cimminello tripled home Radomski. Serio followed with the first home run of her Brakettes’ career, putting Stratford up 3-0. The Brakettes tacked on one more run to go up 4-0, heading into the third inning.

Serio doubled in the fourth with the bases loaded, driving home all three runners. She had five RBI in the contest.

Mollica started the eight-run rally with a leadoff single, and put an exclamation point on it with her third homer of the 2008 campaign. The three-run shot was Mollica’s third hit of the game. Denis also had three hits, including two doubles, while Mouse added two singles.

The Brakettes will return to action Thursday night at 7:00 at DeLuca HOF Field, as the Stratford Breakers will pay the Brakettes a visit for two games.

Both games will be broadcast right here at www.brakettes.com.
