Brakettes Extend Scoreless Streak in Sweep

June 7, 2013 - The Stratford Brakettes improved to 6-0 on the young season with a pair of rain-soaked, Thursday night wins over the Stratford Diamonds at DeLuca Field. The Brakettes took the doubleheader by 11-0 and 8-0 scores, as Sam Greiner won her 2013 debut and Steffi Call threw her second no-hitter of the season and struck out 13 in the nightcap.

Brakette pitchers have yet to allow a run in six decisions this year, while winning every game in five innings or less. They have only needed to bat in the bottom half of the fifth in two games thus far, including the late game Thursday.

Greiner struck out six and walked one, while giving up just one hit, a first-inning single by Kirsten Guerrero.

Amber Radomski led the offensive attack with a 5-for-5 night, including 5 RBI's. Call also launched a three-run shot in the early contest to break the game open.

After a scoreless first, the Brakettes got on the board in the second inning of the first game. Call led off with a walk and was sacrificed over the second by Mandie Fishback. Jess Mouse pushed Call to third with a two-out single, and followed Call across the plate on a two-run triple by Radomski for a 2-0 lead.

Kate Bowen started a five-run rally in the third inning with a single, then was safe at second on a fielder's choice grounder, which allowed Ashley Waters to reach first base. With one out, Call lined her second homer of the year over the fence in left-center, stretching the margin to 5-0.

Fishback reached on a base hit to continue to the rally and scored the Brakettes' sixth run on a triple by Becca Carden. Mouse then grounded out to short, but drove in Carden on the play for a 7-0 lead.

The Brakettes put the finishing touches on the rout in the fourth inning, scoring another four runs.

Denise Denis walked with one out in the frame and went to third on a single by Call. Call advanced to second on the throw, putting two in scoring position. Denis came home on a wild pitch, which sent Call to third. Fishback lifted a sac fly to score Call, pushing the lead to 9-0.

Nadia Kemp kept it rolling with a single and went first-to-third on a base hit by Mouse, who also advanced to second on the throw. Radomski followed with a double, her third hit of the game, to drive in the last two runs and close out the scoring at 11-0.

Radomski finished a home run shy of the cycle in the first game, and added a pair of singles in the nightcap.

The Brakettes left no doubt about their intentions in the late game, as they scored five times in the first inning.

Bowen led off with a single and went to third when Waters reached on an error. Waters went to second on the play, putting two on with no outs. Denis drove in both runners with a single for a 2-0 lead, but the Brakettes kept the pressure on the Diamonds.

Denis stole second and went to third on a base hit by Fishback, giving the Brakettes runners on the corners. Carden drove in Denis on a fielder's choice for a 3-0 lead, and reached second due to an error on the play. Fishback scurried to third, leaving runners at second and third. Mouse delivered a single to bring in Fishback and Carden, giving the Brakettes a 5-0 advantage.

Waters doubled with one out in the second and scored on a double by Call, extending the margin to 6-0. The Brakettes could have done more damage in the inning if not for a pair of diving catches by Diamonds' shortstop Jessica Delawder.

Carden helped manufacture a run in the third, as she led off with a single and stole second. Mouse offered up yet another RBI single, scoring Carden for a 7-0 lead.

After Call struck out the side in the top of the fifth, the Brakettes scratched one more run across in the home half to close out the game.

Fishback reached on a one-out single and was pushed to second on a walk by Carden. With two outs, Radomski ended the soggy matchup with an RBI single to plate Fishback with the decisive run.

Call moved to 3-0 with the victory, as the Brakettes improved their 2013 record to 6-0.

The Brakettes have Friday night off as they prepare for their first road trip of the year. The squad will play a pair of doubleheaders against the Lyons Spirit in Lyons, PA this weekend, at 7:00 Saturday night and 11:00 am on Sunday.

Unfortunately, the Saturday night games will NOT be broadcast, but the Sunday morning games will be live webcast at brakettes.com.
