Weiman Wins Debut; Brakettes Take Three

July 20, 2013 - Emily Weiman made a successful debut with the Stratford Brakettes on Saturday afternoon, as she spun a one-hitter to capture a 6-0 win over the New York Swag (Black Team). The Brakettes also shut out the New York Swag (Red Team) and the CT Angels, by 7-0 and 11-0 scores, on Saturday night to finish pool play undefeated in the Brakettes Invitational.

Weiman struck out seven on her way to her first victory, as the Brakettes improved to 45-0. She walked one and gave up just a third-inning single to Nelly Rosario.

The game was called after five innings, due to the one hour, twenty minute time limit for pool play games. No new inning may be started after that time has elapsed from the start of the game.

The Brakettes were held scoreless until the third inning, when they exploded for five runs on five hits and an error.

Britt Lampert started the rally with a hard-hit single up the middle. Kate Bowen bunted to move Lampert over, but Swag starter Chelsea Lisikatos fielded the bunt and threw to second, but Lampert was in safe. Bowen took first on the play, and both runners moved up a base when Ashley Waters reached on an error at first base.

Denise Denis followed and roped a double to score Lampert and Bowen, putting the Brakettes up 2-0. Waters took third on the play, and Denis stole second to put two in scoring position for Steffi Call.

Call came through with a single to score Waters and push Denis to third. Elise Fortier delivered a double, which scored Denis for a 4-0 margin and pushed Call to third. Mandie Fishback then grounded out to the pitcher, and Call charged home on the throw to first for a 5-0 advantage.

Call also walked with two outs in the fourth inning and was pinch-run for by Marield Schlaefer. Fortier drilled her second double of the game to send Schlaefer across with the sixth and final run. Fortier had three hits in the contest.

After Weiman (1-0) retired the side in order in the top of the fifth, the game was called after the Swag conceded the victory, with the Brakettes due up and only three minutes left on the clock.

Brandice Balschmiter (4-0) took the decision in the second win, a 7-0 shutout of the New York Swag (Red Team). She struck out seven batters, while walking three. She surrendered just two hits in the contest, giving up back-to-back singles in the fifth inning to Val Sadowl and Zee Pierce.

The Brakettes went up 4-0 in the first inning with just two hits, but picked up five walks in the frame, including bases-loaded walks by Fortier and Lampert. Mandie Fishback also had a two-run single in the inning.

Steffi Call hit 13th home run of the year in the game, a solo shot in the second inning, which gave the Brakettes a 5-0 lead.

Becca Carden reached on an error in the third and scored on a base hit by Kate Bowen for a 6-0 advantage. The last run came in during the fourth inning, as Jess Mouse led off with a walk and eventually scored on a wild pitch.

The Brakettes won their third game of the day behind Sam Greiner, who hurled a two-hitter to improve to 21-0.

Mandie Fishback went 3-for-3 in the matchup, while contributing a two-run double in the four-run first. Ashley Waters and Becca Carden also had RBI singles in the inning.

Call led off the third frame and smashed her 14th homer of the year to tie Elise Fortier for the team-lead. Denise Denis also delivered a bases-loaded double in the inning, as the Brakettes scored six in the frame.

Mariel Schlaefer drove in the last run in the fourth inning with an RBI single, closing out the scoring at 11-0. The decision pushed the Brakettes' record on the season to 47-0.

With the three wins on Saturday, the Brakettes finished pool play at 4-0 and were seeded first for Sunday's bracketed, single-elimination play. They will receive a bye into the semi-finals and face the winner of a 10:00 quarterfinal between the Stratford Seahawks and CT Eliminators.

All four games at DeLuca on Sunday in single-elimination, bracket play will be live video webcast at brakettes.com.
