Sunday Night
Brakettes Drop Battle of the Sexes II to Bluefish

June 15, 2015 - The Stratford Brakettes took on the Bridgeport Bluefish on Sunday night at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport, dropping a 7-3 decision in Battle of the Sexes II.

Approximately 3,000 fans came out to watch the exhibition, which once again saw College of the Holy Cross assistant coach Nick French in the circle for the Bluefish. Sydney Matzko started the contest for the Brakettes and went the first three innings. Laura Ricciardone threw the middle three frames for the Brakettes, while Brandice Balschmiter took over pitching duties for Stratford in the seventh.

The Bluefish jumped ahead in the bottom of the first with a lone tally, but gained some distance in the third with back-to-back homers by Matt Burns and Frazier Hall.

The Brakettes stormed back in the top of the fourth, led by a three-run shot by Tatum Buckley (photo). The second baseman also showed off her defensive prowess by snaring a would-be base hit to centerfield with a fully-outstretched, diving catch behind the bag (photo). The perfectly-timed grab drew a standing ovation from the crowd.

Although the Brakettes pulled within 4-3 on the shot by Buckley, they could never get any closer. Two Bluefish runs in the bottom of the fourth and a lone tally in the sixth gave Bridgeport all the offense they needed.

Balschmiter pitched the last two innings for the Brakettes and did not allow a run. She also drew oohs and aahs from the crowd when she delivered a couple pitches between her legs. Both teams had plenty of fun playing it up for the crowd, and hundreds of youth league softball players congregated around the Brakette dugout well after the game for player autographs.

The Brakettes return to action on Thursday night at 6:30 with their annual game against the CT High School All-Stars. The game will be a single, nine-inning contest, featuring many of the state’s best graduating high school seniors. Stratford will also face the Newtown (PA) Rock Gold in a pair of doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday nights at 7:00.
