Thursday Night
Brakettes Sprint Past High School All-Stars

June 19, 2015 - The Connecticut H.S. All-Stars’ Megan Weir matched Brakette starter Sydney Matzko for the first two innings at DeLuca Field on Thursday night, putting up a pair of zeros on the scoreboard. In fact, the All-Stars outhit Stratford 3-0 in those first two frames. However, the Brakettes exploded for six hits and five runs in the bottom of the third, en route to an 11-1 victory in seven innings. Denise Denis drilled a grand slam in the third frame, her third home run of the year, and the 96th of her illustrious career.

Matzko went four innings in the game to pick up the win, while striking out 10. She improved to 2-0 on the season, after throwing a no-hitter in her Brakette debut in Lyons, PA, last weekend.

Laura Ricciardone came on in relief in the fifth inning and struck out six in her three innings of work.

The Brakettes finally got through against Weir on the home third, as Taylor Moss started a rally with a one-out single to right field. Katie Petroski walked to put two on. After Weir retired the next batter, Britt Lampert came through with a single to left to load the bases. This set the stage for Denis, who went deep to left-centerfield to clear the bases and give the Brakettes a 4-0 lead.

Emily Lochten and Elena Bowman followed with back-to-back doubles, and Lochten scored on Bowman’s drive to stretch the lead to 5-0.

The All-Stars drew closer to Stratford in the top of the fourth, as Dani Kemp led off with an infield single. With one out, back-to-back singles by Kaylee Rasmussen and Paige Hine allowed Kemp to score, narrowing the margin to 5-1.

The Brakettes put it out of reach in the fifth, when they tacked on six more runs. Val Suto led off with an infield single and moved over to second when Lampert reached on a fielder’s choice. Denis singled to load the bases, bringing Lochten back to the plate in a big spot.

Lochten blooped a single to left field to score Suto, extending the advantage to 6-1. Lampert had to wait for the ball to fall in and was forced out at third on a dart from left field. With runners at first and second, Mary Sciglimpaglia picked up a base hit to left, sending Denis home with the Brakettes’ seventh run.

Sarah Bencivenga followed with a two-run double, making it a 9-1 game. Cassie Ruscz came up next and crushed her third homer of the 2015 campaign, a two-run blast, closing out the scoring at 11-1.

Yaixsa Vargas, Kayley Kempf, Harleigh Kacegowicz and Megan Weir accounted for the other High School All-Star hits on the evening.

The Brakettes return to action on Friday night at DeLuca Hall of Fame Field in Stratford, CT, with a 7:00 doubleheader against the Newtown Rock (PA). The Rock are a perennial top-five 18U Gold team in the country.
