Brakette Bats Explode in Sweep of Swag

July 4, 2015 - The Stratford Brakettes powered past the NY Swag on Friday night at DeLuca Hall of Fame Field, grabbing both ends of a doubleheader, 8-0 and 11-0. Sarah Bencivenga led the offensive onslaught with two of the team’s four home runs in the early contest, while Denise Denis scored four times, drove in three runs and posted three hits in the twinbill.

Sydney Matzko picked up the win in the first game, striking out five and scattering four hits over four innings. She improved to 4-2 on the season with the victory.

Shannon Smith came on in relief in the fifth inning, throwing two innings in her first appearance of the year. She struck out two and did not allow a hit.

Molly Roche led the way for New York, picking up hits in both games of the doubleheader. Cassidy Wooten, Lindsay Larkin and Lindsey Montemarano had the other hits for the Swag in the first game. Giordano had a base hit in the nightcap.

Bencivenga put Stratford up 1-0 in the second inning with a solo shot to centerfield, but the real fireworks were yet to begin.

After Denis reached on a two-base error while leading off the third, Emily Lochten crushed a towering homer to left, pushing Stratford’s lead to 3-0. It was the second home run for Lochten on the season. Elena Bowman followed and launched a long ball of her own, her third of 2015. After the next batter was retired, Bencivenga smacked her second home run of the contest, and fourth of the year, to stretch the lead to 5-0.

Denis beat out a bunt single with two outs in the fourth and stole second base. Emily Lochten reached on an error, which allowed Denis to race home with the Brakettes’ sixth run.

Val Suto, who had three hits and scored three times on the night, reached on an error and stole second to start the sixth inning. With one out, Denis singled to bring home Suto for a 7-0 lead. Denis swiped second and the scored on a base hit by Lochten, closing out the victory in six frames due to the run rule.

Brandice Balschmiter dominated again with nine strikeouts in the late matchup, limiting the Swag to two singles and not giving up a walk. She stretched her mark to 7-2 for the season with the shutout.

Suto picked up the first of her two hits in the nightcap while leading off the home first. She stole second and scored the Brakettes’ first run on a single by Bencivenga. The 1-0 lead would hold until the bottom of the third.

Mary Sciglimpaglia started a big inning in the home third with a line drive to center. She moved to second on a base hit by Katie Petroski, who also had two safeties in the game. Suto beat out a bunt to load the bases, and Jordan Whitley extended the margin to 2-0 with an RBI single to plate Sciglimpaglia. Denis then launched a sac fly to centerfield to score Petroski for a 3-0 lead.

Bencivenga reached on a fielder’s choice, while an error on the play moved Suto and Whitley up a base apiece. Tatum Buckley followed and also reached on an error, which sent Suto racing home for a 4-0 advantage. With the bases loaded yet again, Bowman was hit by a pitch to score Whitley, pushing the lead to 5-0. Buckley moved to second on the play, while Bencivenga went to third and eventually scored on a wild pitch for a 6-0 margin.

Taylor Moss drove in Buckley and Bowman with a single, giving Stratford an 8-0 lead after three innings.

Petroski led off and picked up her second hit in the fourth frame, and then moved up two bases on a pair of passed balls. After Whitley worked a walk, Denis blooped a single to score Petroski for a 9-0 lead. Buckley also walked before Bowman doubled to score Whitley and Denis to close out the scoring at 11-0.

The Brakettes return to action on Thursday night with a 7:00 doubleheader against the Stratford Breakers at DeLuca Hall of Fame Field in Stratford, CT.
