Thursday Night
Brakettes Rout Breakers, but Rain Takes Second Game

July 10 - The Stratford Brakettes took the first game of an in-town matchup with the Stratford Breakers on Thursday night at DeLuca Hall of Fame Field, sprinting to a 13-0 win in five innings. In the nightcap, the Brakettes were up 6-0 in the middle of the third when the game was called due to a steady downpour.

Sydney Matzko hurled five strong frames in the early contest, giving up just two hits and striking out two to earn the shutout. She improved to 5-2 on the season with the victory.

Emily Komornik started for the Breakers and kept the Brakettes scoreless in the first inning, but fell into trouble after a two-out rally in the second.

Komornik retired the first two batters in the bottom of the second, but a two-out walk to Jordan Whitley was the start to a seemingly endless offensive attack by the Brakettes. After the free pass was issued, Cassie Ruscz singled to put two Brakettes on base. Mary Sciglimpaglia roped a double to center to score both runners, giving the Brakettes an early 2-0 edge. Val Suto and Britt Lampert then reached on back-to-back bunt singles to load the bases and continue the inning.

Denise Denis, who led the Brakettes in RBIs to start the weekend, upped her season total with a three-run double that stretched the margin to 5-0. Denis has now driven in 22 runs on the season, and also leads the team with four home runs and 16 runs scored.

The Brakettes soon pushed the lead to 9-0, as Elena Bowman, Tatum Buckley and Sarah Bencivenga reached on consecutive singles to start the third. Whitley then reached on a fielder’s choice that saw Bowman forced out at home, while the other runners advanced a base each. Ruscz worked a bases loaded walk to bring home Buckley for the team’s sixth run.

Sciglimpaglia drilled another two-run double to make it 8-0, and a sac fly by Suto plated Whitley to extend the gap to 9-0.

With a run-rule shortened game in sight, the Brakettes didn’t stop there. They picked up another four runs in the home fourth, after Emily Lochten led off with single. Katie Petroski reached on an error, sending Lochten to second. Lochten swiped third on a delayed steal and went home on an errant throw for a 10-0 lead.

Buckley kept the inning going with a single, sending Petroski over to third. Buckley took second uncontested, putting two in scoring position. Bencivenga followed and blooped a double to right field. Petroski scored easily, but Buckley had to wait to see if the looper would fall in, eventually taking third after watching it hit green. Buckley came home to score on an RBI single by Whitley, and Ruscz drove in Bencivenga with a base hit to close out the scoring at 13-0.

Matzko continued her cool dominance of the Breakers with a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the fifth, giving the Brakettes a run rule-shortened decision. She retired the last eight batters she faced.

Laura Ricciardone took the ball to start the nightcap for the Brakettes, and was completely overpowering in her three innings of work before the storm washed out play. She faced just nine batters, while striking out eight.

Suto walked to lead off the first and stole second base, taking third on an infield single by Lampert. Suto then scored on a sac fly by Lochten for the game’s first tally. Lampert stole second and went to third on a base hit by Bowman, before racing home on a fielder’s choice grounder by Whitley.

The Brakettes picked up four more runs in the third, extending the lead to 6-0 in what turned out to be their last at-bat. They improved to 19-6 on the year with the win in the early contest, while the second game was called too early for a decision.

The Brakettes return to action on Friday night at DeLuca Field, as they take on the New York City Havoc at 7:00, and will square off against the New Jersey Rampage at approximately 9:00.
