BRAKETTES OPEN DEFENSE OF USSSA TITLE SATURDAY AT DELUCA FIELD
 July 16, 2015 - The third annual USSSA Brakettes Invitational will take place Saturday and Sunday at Frank DeLuca Hall of Fame Field. Joining the host Brakettes will be the Connecticut Eliminators, the Connecticut Titans, and New York City Swag. The teams will play a round-robin schedule Saturday followed by a double-elimination bracket Sunday.
“We moved the tournament up a week this year, but the date conflicted with two other tournaments in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. We had 10 teams last year but many of them had long-standing commitments with the other events. Next year we will move it back to the last week in July,” said tournament director Dave Rocha, the USSSA Director for New England.
The Brakettes' scheduled doubleheader with the Connecticut Seahawks 23-U Thursday has been postponed. It will be played as part of a split doubleheader July 23 with the Stratford Breakers.
Entering the weekend with a 23-6 overall record and a nine-game win streak, Manager John Stratton will utilize the talents of Brandice Balschmiter (9-2, 0.34 ERA), Sydney Matzko (6-2, 1.66) of Torrington, and Tatum Buckley (0-0) of Monroe, the former two-time Gatorade Player of the Year at Masuk High. Laura Ricciardone (8-2, 1.20) is recruiting for the Army softball team this weekend.
Center fielder Val Suto (.444), DH Brittany Lampert (.442), right fielder Denise Denis (.393) and utility player Sarah Bencivenga (.385) are the hitting leaders.
The Brakettes have won this event the last two years, going 12-0 and outscoring the opposition 89-4.
