Ricciardone One-Hitter Leads Way to Brakettes Quarterfinal Win v. Seahawks 5-0
 August 8, 2015 - by Ilan Woll - Following pool play wins against the Duchess Debs and Queens Lady Rangers on Thursday night, the Brakettes faced the Connecticut Seahawks for their opening matchup in bracket play Friday. Harvard graduate Laura Ricciardone took the circle against Amity High School’s Katie Koshes in Stratford’s only game of the day. The Seahawks had defeated Team CT 3-2 to advance to this game.
The Brakettes were held scoreless in the first despite a Val Suto leadoff hit as Koshes successfully retired the remaining batters. However, in the second frame, Elena Bowman blooped a double to centerfield, followed by a hard single to center from Sarah Bencivenga to put runners in the corners. A wild pitch and double by Jordan Whitley scored the 2 runners for the early 2-0 lead.
Stratford added another three runs in the third. Suto singled and reached third on a throwing error, then scored on a Brittany Lampert ground ball. Denise Denis then walked. Elena Bowman doubled to right, scoring Denis. Bencivenga also doubled to the fence which scored Bowman. Katie Koshes then took control, allowing only a single Brakettes runner on base in each of the last three frames, avoiding further damage.
Meanwhile, Ricciardone was dominant throughout the game, allowing just a fourth inning single to Casey Harding through the hole between short and third. She struck out eleven and allowed no walks.
Ricciardone improved to 14-2 on the year. The Brakettes will go on to face the St. Louis Saints at 2:30pm Saturday. All games at DeLuca Field in the 7th annual Women’s Major Softball tournament will be broadcast on brakettes.com.
