Thursday Night
Denis Powers Brakettes to Twin Victories over Swag, 10-0 and 15-2

July 1 - by Ilan Woll - The Brakettes scored early and often as a combination of pitching, offense, and taking advantage of defensive miscues gave the Brakettes big wins against the New York Swag.

For Game 1 Patti Sciglimpaglia took the mound against Christine Campbell.  The Swag threatened early as Morgan Cole singled to left and advanced on a sacrifice.  Free passes to Molly Leitner and Elizabeth Curcio with two outs put the Swag on the verge of scoring, but a key strikeout ended the threat.

Meanwhile, in the bottom of the first, the Brakettes started with two strikeouts, but then found their offensive groove. Denise Denis singled to center and stole second.  Tatum Buckley then lined a hit to left field for an RBI. Following a walk to Emily Lochten, Sarah Bencivenga then singled to right.  Danni Kemp then hit a shot to rightfield.  A defensive miscue resulted in both runs scoring giving the Brakettes a 4-0 lead.

In the second, Val Suto had an infield hit, and, as a result of two errors, she and Britt Lampert ended up in scoring position.  A Denis ground ball scored Suto. Then Buckley drilled the ball to the fence for an RBI double, and scored on a Lochten single.  Bencivenga then hit the ball down the rightfield line for a double and another run to extend the lead to eight.

In the third, the Brakettes capped off their victory as Mary Sciglimpaglia doubled to right center.  Jess Cicerchia, new to the team, came in to pinch run.  Lampert blooped a single to center to put runners at the corners.  Following an RBI ground ball by Denis, Buckley grounded a ball through the hole into left for the final run.

Patti Sciglimpaglia, meanwhile. allowed only one base runner after the first inning, and finished the game allowing only one hit and walking two while striking out five.  She extended her record to 7-0 on the year. Buckley had three hits, along with two runs and three RBIs.  Bencivenga also had three hits and drove in two.

For game 2, Tatum Buckley took the circle against Jackie Hoffman.  The Swag again threatened in the first as Cassie Lagana singled to center.  Amber Schissler, a standout at Campbell University, then smashed a ball deep to centerfield for an easy home run to get the early 2-0 lead.

The Brakettes however, opened the game up in the first, taking advantage of defensive miscues in a seven run frame.  Val Suto reached on a fielding error, and stole second.  Britt Lampert then hit a soft grounder in front of the pitcher, beating out the throw.  Denise Denis, who had been seeking the home run stroke, found it at a key moment driving the ball over the centerfield fence for the lead.  Following another error, Buckley reached first and was driven in as Sarah Bencivenga smashed a triple to the right field corner, driving in Buckley.  Amber Radomski then hit a seeing-eye single into left for another run.  Patti Sciglimpaglia, now playing first, doubled to left to put two in scoring position.  A throwing error on the infield scored the next two to give the home team a 7-2 lead.

In the second, Stratford struck again as, following a Denis walk, Buckley hit a long shot that bounced over the fence in leftfield for a ground rule double.  Bencivenga then singled to left to score both runners, extending the lead to seven.

Denis started off the July 4th weekend with her own fireworks in the 4th, drilling a pitch over the fence in right centerfield for her second home run of the game and third of the year.  After a walk to Buckley, a single by Bencivenga, and a walk to Danni Kemp, Radomski also walked to bring in a run.  With the bases loaded, Patti Sciglimpaglia powered the ball over the fence for her third of the season and a grand slam which ended the scoring for the 15-2 win.

Much like game 1, Buckley dominated the game after the first inning, allowing just two base runners.  She allowed two hits on the day, walking one and striking out nine.  Her record is now 6-1.

Bencivenga finished the day with 3 hits, while Denis and Patti Sciglimpaglia had 2 each, with both of them driving in four runs.

The Brakettes host the NY Swag on Friday before traveling to Lyons, PA for the annual Lyons Ballfield 4th of July Tournament on Saturday and Sunday.  Next weekend will be the Brakettes 70th reunion weekend.  All games will be broadcast on Brakettes.com.
