Friday Night
Brakettes Power, Charlie Nolen, dominate Pekin Lettes 11-5, 6-0

July 16 - by Ilan Woll - As the 2 oldest softball franchises, the Lettes of Pekin, IL and the Brakettes of Stratford CT, met on the Lettes 83rd anniversary weekend, honoring their alumni, Patti Sciglimpaglia and Erica Phillips met as the two venerable clubs reconnected in an old rivalry.

Stratford got on the board early as Val Suto reached on an infield hit. Denise Denis then powered a home run over the centerfield wall. Emily Lochten then followed suit with her own homer. In the third, they added two more runs as Denis doubled, bringing in two more runs.

The Lettes would not go quietly however as, in the third, Hailey Hall singled to right, and Janelle Bender did the same to left. Julia McConkey hit a line drive to left, scoring Hall. Following an error, which brought in Bender, Dani Smith drilled a single to center for the third run.

In the fifth, a sac fly from Sadi Mosher brought the Lettes to within one, as Charlie Nolen and Tatum Buckley pitched in relief.

However, the Brakettes tore things open in the sixth inning as, following singles by Jordan Whitley and Summer Damiano, Patti Sciglimpaglia returned as a designated player and slammed a 3-run homerun to deep center to make the lead 8-4.

In the 7th, an RBI double from Denis, and a two run double from Buckley made the game 8-5 as the Lettes had scored once in the sixth inning.

Tatum Buckley earned the win in relief. Denise Denis took the offensive honors going 3-3 with 5 RBIs. Val Suto, Emily Lochten, and Jordan Whitley each had two hits. Hailey Hall, Julia McConkey and Janelle Bender each had two hits for the Lettes.

For game 2, Charlie Nolen re-took the mound and dominated the Lettes, allowing 4 hits and striking out 4. While there were two runners on with one out in four different innings, Nolen worked her way out of each jam for the shutout win. Her record improved to 2-0.

For the Brakettes, in the second, Tatum Buckley singled up the middle, and Sarah Bencivenga punched a home run to leftfield for the early lead. For the third frame, Patti Sciglimpaglia and Val Suto singled, followed by an inside riseball hitting Britt Lampert. Denise Denis then drove in two with a single to rightfield and Emily Lochten singled to center to bring one more in.

Hannah Cooper later scored on a throwing error in the fourth. This cemented the 6-0.

Along with her offense, Lochten showed defensive excellence, robbing Hailey Hall of potential hits with a range play behind second base, and a very strong throw on a slow grounder.

The Brakettes improved to 33-2 on the season. Denise Denis, Emily Lochten, and Summer Damiano each had two hits. Denise had 7 RBIs for the double header.

Saturday the Brakettes go on to the Pekin Invitational at Mineral Springs Park in Pekin, IL. In pool play, the Brakettes will play the St. Louis Saints and the East Peoria Lady Rage. They will play their first bracket game later in the afternoon. All games will be broadcast on Brakettes.com
