Milestones Accomplished: Denis 700th Hit Ices Brakettes 3800th Career Victory in Wins Over Spirit 6-1, 3-1

August 1 - by Ilan Woll - A weakened Brakettes team came into Lyons Ballfield missing several key offensive players, but with some playing out of position, strong pitching and timely hitting were the keys to victory.

For game one, Megan Good faced off against Liz Gall

The Spirit took an early lead in the first as Elaine Bedell reached on a throwing error, and advanced to third on a Liz Gall single. Jessica Strong, a new member of the Spirit, lifted a long fly to left, which scored Bedell for the early lead. In the second, Bedell made her presence known again, ranging far into left center to deny Sarah Bencivenga of an extra base hit.

After leaving two runners on in the second, the Brakettes tied the game as Denise Denis reached on an infield misplay, stole second, then scored on a Tatum Buckley single.

Stratford took the lead in the sixth, as Buckley singled to right. Bencivenga then sacrificed her to second, and Amber Radomski lined a single up the middle for the RBI.

Denise Denis finally added to her legacy. In the seventh, Stratford opened the game up as Mary Sciglimpaglia doubled. Britt Lampert then drove the ball to center for an RBI single. Denis then got her 700th hit, tripling into rightfield to score another run (photo). A walk to Bencivenga put runners on the corners as Megan Good smashed a ball into the gap for a two-run triple to cement the 6-1 vicory in the Brakettes 3800th team victory.

Megan Good (4-0), in the meantime, continued her flawless record as a Brakette, allowing only one unearned run on three hits, striking out nine. She retired 17 in a row from the first to the seventh inning. Tatum Buckley, Amber Radomski, and a returning Cassie Ruscz each had two hits. Radomski reached base successfully in each plate appearance.

For the second game in the doubleheader, Tatum Buckley took the circle against Jenn Shelhammer.

After Stratford left two runners on in the top of the first, the first inning curse again hit the Brakettes. With one out, Elaine Bedell had an infield hit. Liz Gall then singled her to third, and, much like the first game, Jessica Strong hit the ball sharply to left field, which scored Bedell for the early lead. The inning ended unusually as, on a wild pitch, Mary Sciglimpaglia threw to Tatum Buckley to catch Liz Gall attempting to score.

The Brakettes had opportunities for the next three innings, including an excellent bunting display from Patti Sciglimpaglia in the third, pushing the ball past all the infielders for a single. The fourth inning saw a screaming liner from Amber Radomski snagged by Liz Parkins at third.

The top of the fifth finally saw the Brakettes capitalize as Mary Sciglimpaglia singled to left. Danni Kemp, who came in as a courtesy runner, scored as Patti Sciglimpaglia then doubled to left. Denise Denis continued her torrid hitting with an RBI single to take the lead.

After a one out double from the Spirit's Jenn Dalickas to left field failed to tie the game up, Stratford got an insurance run as Megan Good singled to left. Amber Radomski then singled, advancing her to second. Following a sacrifice bunt from Cassie Ruscz (the fourth successful sacrifice for the team on the day), two runners were in scoring position. Mary Sciglimpaglia then hit a long fly to centerfield for a key sacrifice fly, scoring Good in the 3-1 victory.

Tatum Buckley (16-1) retired ten in a row at one point in the game for the win. She allowed six hits and struck out four.

The Brakettes return Tuesday for a special three way series playing the St. Louis Saints. The Saints will then play the CT Seahawks, as preparation for the WMS Championships Thursday through Sunday. All games will be at Frank DeLuca Hall of Fame Field and broadcast on brakettes.com
