Saturday at Lyons, PA
Brakettes Split Opening Day at Cornfield Classic with 8-0 and 15-0 Wins, Lose 3-0 in Pool Play Finale

June 10 - by Ilan Woll - The Brakettes annual trek to the Lyons Ballfield in Lyons, PA began with the Brakettes facing the New Jersey Avalanche. Raeanne Geffert of Bucknell took the circle against Sophia Chong.

Following a quick first inning, Stratford started the offense after Jolie Duffner singled to center. Samantha Rodriguez then reached on a fielding error which scored Duffner. Abby Abramson and Heather Holly then singled to load the bases. A walk to Molly Keshin brought in the second run of the frame.

The third inning proved prophetic as Denise Denis, Duffner, and Alex Heinen all tripled in order, with a Lauren Pitney ground ball scoring Heinan for the five run Brakettes' lead.

After a fourth where Abramson and Holly singled, but did not score, the fifth saw the game end prematurely after Denis and Duffner singled. Heinen then hit a sacrifice fly to score Denis. Following a walk and a fielder's choice, singles from Abramson and Holly produced the final run-rule victory.

Raeanne Geffert earned her first win as a Brakette allowing just one hit while striking out six in the effort. Jolie Duffner took the offensive honors with three hits, including a triple, scoring each time. Abby Abramson and Heather Holly each added three hits in the game with Denise Denis going 2-for-3.

Game 2 saw the Faquier Freeze coming from Virginia to play in the tournament. Kaysee Talcik took the circle for the Brakettes.

Very quickly, the Brakettes dominated as Britt Younan singled, Denise Denis was hit on the arm, and Jolie Duffner reached on an error. Alex Heinen then smashed the ball into the right center gap, going 265 feet to the wall. By the time the throw came home, Heinen had already scored for her second home run of the year for the early lead. An unearned run in the second scored Molly Keshin in the second for the 5-0 lead.

Stratford put this game in the books in the third inning, scoring ten runs with fifteen batters coming to the plate. Big hits in the inning were a three RBI double by Brit Younan and home runs by both Denis (her first of the year) and Heinen (her third).

Kaysee Talcik improved to 1-0 on the year, allowing two hits and a walk in three innings, while striking out six. Alex Heinen had two home runs and five RBIs in the game. Brit Younan and Jolie Duffner each added two hits on the game.

For the final game, the Pegasus, who earlier in the day had tied with the Freeze, gave the Brakettes a very different look. Brandice Balschmiter took the circle against West Chester University standout Amanda Houck.

In the bottom of the first Pegasus' Monica Twardowski singled to shortstop. Following a walk to Amanda Jones, Rachel Pritchard then tripled to deep center scoring two. An Emily Quatrale single then scored her.

Stratford was unable to get a hit the next two innings. Meanwhile Balschmiter regained her composure and blanked the Pegasus hitters, ultimately retiring nine in a row.

The Brakettes rallied with two outs in the fourth, as Jolie Duffner singled and Alex Heinen reached on an error. Lauren Pitney smashed a ball to the left side, where a nice play from Messiah College's Amanda Jones stopped the play and ended the threat.

The fifth saw a similar effort as Heather Holly singled, followed by a fielder's choice which put runners on first and second. However, a strong play by Sara Ercolani turned a situation with two on and no outs into a rally-killing double play.

Stratford turned the defensive tables when, following a Samantha Fouracre single and a fielder's choice, Pitney snagged a grounder, threw to Younan, who turned the pivot to Holly, ending the inning.

However, the Brakettes bats were held silent the rest of the game for the loss. Balschmiter (1-1) struck out five, allowing only one hit after the first inning. Amanda Houck allowed only three hits, walking one and striking out five in her win.

The Brakettes advance to the four seed on Sunday playing the home team Lyons Spirit at 8AM. The winner of that game plays the Nook Gold in the semifinals. All games are broadcast on brakettes.com
