School's Out for Summer as Connecticut High School All-Stars Fall to Brakettes 9-5

June 15 - by Ilan Woll - For an elite group of senior high school softball players, the season did not end with conference championship games and preparing for college. Those chosen players made the voyage to DeLuca Field to face the Stratford Brakettes in a special nine inning single game.

Nicole Williams started the game against Granby High School's Kari Marks. For the All-Stars, St. Joseph's Hannah Hutchison started the offense early with a double past the left fielder, ultimately scoring on a single by Delilah DeStefano of Trumbull High to take the early lead.

The Brakettes were scoreless in their first. However, a single by Lauren Pitney in the second started the comeback as Briana Marcelino singled to right. The ball then went past the fielder, scoring Pitney. A Gabby Laccona ground out brought in Marcelino for an early 2-1 lead.

Kari Marks then aided her own cause with a single in the fourth frame, advancing on a ground ball. A single to centerfield by East Hartford's Sydney Oatway tied the game at two. The Brakettes regained the lead in the bottom half as Denise Denis walked, then advanced on a single by Jolie Duffner. Marcelino then singled to drive in Denis, with the fourth run coming on a throwing error for the 4-2 lead.

Connecticut's finest high school players regained the lead in the fifth as Laurelton Hall's Emma Larke singled to left field off new pitcher Ali DuBois. Gianna Gonzalez of New Britain then walked. Brooke Matyasovsky, graduating Amity High, slammed a rise ball to centerfield and even a dive from Val Suto could not deny the All-Stars a three run homer and a one run edge.

However, Stratford continued the offense in the fifth with their own rally. Heather Holly singled to left. Suto then slapped a single, with a sharp line drive by Britt Younan loading the bases. Denis then walked to tie up the game. A Jolie Duffner line drive single scored an additional two to put the Brakettes up two.

As DuBois settled in, retiring the last four hitters she faced, she was relieved by Kaysee Talcik. Talcik retired all nine batters she faced in the final three innings. However, she received two insurance runs in the eighth by way of a double to the left field corner by Duffner, a Britt Lampert walk and a Gabby Laccona single, for the final 9-5 victory.

Ali DuBois (2-0) earned the victory, while Kaysee Talcik struck out six of the nine hitters she faced in the final three innings to notch her second save.

Jolie Duffner had three hits, including a double with two runs and two batted in. Briana Marcelino had two singles in her Brakettes debut. Val Suto and Britt Younan each added two singles. Gabby Laccona added three RBIs.

The Brakettes return Friday at 6:30pm ET for a second nine inning special game against the Ridgefield Rebels. Saturday will see a traditional double header at 7pm against Team Connecticut. All games will be broadcast on Brakettes.com.
