Saturday Night
Brakettes Cruise Past Team CT with Pair of 10-0 Shutouts

June 17 - The Stratford Brakettes rode a Saturday night power surge by Alex Heinen to twin 10-0 decisions over Team Connecticut, improving to 10-1 on the season. Heinen launched a grand slam in the early contest, and crushed two more dingers in the nightcap, giving her a team-leading six home runs on the season.

Ali DuBois fanned 10 Team Connecticut batters in the first game, en route to her second win of the year. She scattered three singles and did not allow a walk.

Gabby Laccona gave the Brakettes the early lead in the home third with a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Megan Hodgdon for a 1-0 margin. Hodgdon came on as the courtesy runner for catcher Sam Rodriguez, who reached on an error.

Briana Marcelino doubled with two outs in the fourth, extending the frame for the Brakettes. Lauren Pitney then crushed a home run to left to stretch the lead to 3-0.

Team CT starter Ashley Eisner worked a scoreless fifth, but the Brakettes attacked again in the bottom of the sixth. Marcelino walked and Pitney was hit by a pitch, putting two runners on. With one out, Rodriguez singled to send Marcelino home. A throwing error allowed Rodriguez to cruise into second, while Pitney scored for a 5-0 margin. Val Suto singled to put runners on the corners, and Laccona walked to load the bases.

Denise Denis brought the sixth run home on a sac fly to right, and Jolie Duffner earned a walk to again load the bases. Heinen followed and walloped her first grand slam as a Brakette, closing out the scoring at 10-0.

Brandice Balschmiter started the late matchup for Stratford and delivered a dominating performance. She struck out 12 in just five innings, and surrendered just a lone single and a walk. Balschmiter moved to 3-1 on the season with the decision.

Laccona got things going for the Brakettes early with a single in the first inning, and came home on a double by Denis. Heinen delivered another RBI with a single to plate Denis, giving Stratford a 2-0 lead.

Pitney doubled to open the home second, and Abramson roped a single to make it a 3-0 game.

The Brakettes kept the foot down on the gas and scored five more runs in the third. Denis led off with her second double of the game, and Duffner reached on an error to bring up the dangerous Heinen.

Heinen crushed her second homer of the doubleheader, a three-run shot to give Stratford a commanding 6-0 margin. Marcelino walked and scored on a double by Pitney, who then came home on a single by Heather Holly for an 8-0 tally.

Duffner reached on a fielder's choice in the fourth, setting the table for Heinen, who continued her incredible display with another long ball. The two-run shot capped the scoring at 10-0 and put the exclamation point on a night to remember.

Eisner broke up Balschmiter's bid for a no-hitter in the fifth with a single up the middle. Balschmiter responded by striking out the next three batters, clinching a weekend sweep for Stratford.

The Brakettes return to action on Thursday night at 7:00 with a doubleheader against the CT Eliminators 23-Unders.
