Balschmiter, Talcik Overpower Stripes and Strikes 13-2, 8-0

June 30 - by Ilan Woll - After a Thursday rainout, a talented 18u team came to DeLuca to face the veteran Brakettes. Ashley Eisnor took the circle for the Stripes and Strikes against Brandice Balschmiter, who recently had moved into fifth place among Brakettes all-time winningest pitchers.

After Gabrielle Vuocolo walked in the first, an error on a ball up the middle from Marissa Trivelpiece gave the Stripes and Strikes a key opportunity, which her sister Megan executed upon with a double to left centerfield, scoring two runs for the early lead.

Stratford then struck back as Val Suto walked and stole second. Theresa Kane followed up with a free pass. Both then scored off of a double from Denise Denis. Alex Heinen then drove Denis in with her own double for an early 3-2 lead.

After Balschmiter struck out the side in the top of the second, Sam Rodriguez singled, advancing on a Britt Lampert perfectly placed slap. Suto reached on an infield hit to load the bases. Kane then sacrificed to center, plating Rodriguez. Denis lined a single to rightfield, scoring an additional two for the 6-2 lead.

Heinen led the third with a double, followed by a blast from Lauren Pitney to centerfield for her second home run of the year. Rodriguez then singled, with Megan Hodgdon reaching on an error. Theresa Kane singled them both in for an additional four runs.

Three more scored in the fourth as singles from Pitney, Rodriguez, and Hodgdon scored a run. Following two fielder's choices, Denis and Jolie Duffner each drove in runs on singles for the final 13-2 win.

Brandice Balschmiter (6-1) retired thirteen in a row after a rough start in the first, striking out nine in her win, allowing just two hits and two walks. Offensively, Denise Denis and Sam Rodriguez each had three hits, with each hitter contributing at least one. Denis added four RBIs with Theresa driving in three. Val Suto, Alex Heinan and Lauren Pitney each added two hits.

For game two, Kaysee Talcik and Hanover Area High School standout Kasidy Slusser faced off.

Talcik started the game off dominating the first three innings in perfect form, striking out two in each frame. Offensively, the Brakettes brought the big bats early. Theresa Kane drove a ball to centerfield which bounced past the center fielder for a one out triple. Denise Denis then launched a home run to right field. A single from Alex Heinen and double from Lauren Pitney powered the early three run lead.

After Kasidy Slusser dominated the second, Kane started the third with a single. Jolie Duffner then drilled a double to the gap for an RBI. Alex Heinen added muscle, towering a ball over the left field fence for a 6-0 lead.

After a walk and error gave the Stripes and Strikes an opportunity in the fourth, Talcik again dominated the batters, with Slusser again holding the Brakettes bats silent in their half. However, in the fifth, Kane again singled. Jolie Duffner pounded a ball to deep centerfield, with the fielder going through the fence scoring Kane. An attempt to throw out Duffner at the plate was errant however, scoring her for the run-rule 8-0 win.

Kaysee Talcik (4-0) threw the first Brakettes no-hitter of the year, striking out eight and walking only one. Theresa Kane had three hits and three runs, while Jolie Duffner added two extra base hits, and Alex Heinen included two hits, including her seventh home run to lead Stratford.

Brakettes games continue Saturday as the Stripes and Strikes return for a 7pm double header. Due to a high heat advisory, the games scheduled for Sunday are cancelled. Thursday, July 5, the Concord, MA Raiders travel to DeLuca, followed by three double headers against the Maryland Chill on Friday through Sunday.
