Friday Night
Brakettes Come From Behind to Defeat Chill

July 7 - The Stratford Brakettes survived a serious scare in the first game of Friday night's doubleheader at DeLuca Hall of Fame Field, coming from behind to beat the Maryland Chill, 3-2, in nine innings. The Brakettes outlasted Maryland in the late contest, 6-3.

The Chill took the early lead in the opener, scoring a run in the first and another in the fifth. They held the Brakettes scoreless until the bottom of the sixth, when the Brakettes tied it up. Stratford eventually scored a run in the home ninth to take the extra-inning victory.

Molly Nies led off the top of the first for the Chill with a single. After moving to second on a groundout, she advanced to third on a wild pitch. A fielder's choice on a grounder to the right side by Shanya Gordon sent Nies across to give the Chill a 1-0 edge.

Gordon started another rally for Maryland in the top of the fifth with a one-out base hit. A single by Meghan Holquist moved Gordon over to second, putting two on. Reilly Vicendese reached on a fielder's choice, and an error on the play allowed Gordon to race home for a 2-0 margin.

Kaycee Talcik came on in relief of Brakette starter Nicole Williams with two outs and the bases loaded in the fifth. Talcik got a huge strikeout to retire the side and keep the Brakettes in the game.

Chill starter Alanna Molz did her part to keep the Brakettes off-balance, striking out five in a complete-game performance. Molz scattered ten singles across nine innings in the tough luck loss.

Val Suto led off the sixth stanza for Stratford and reached on an error. She stole second base and scored on an infield single by Theresa Kane. After taking second on the play, Kane advanced to third on a base hit to right by Denise Denis. Jolie Duffner reached on a fielder's choice, which also sent Kane home with the equalizer.

With the score tied at 2-2, the teams continued to battle into extra innings. Molz and Talcik each spun scoreless frames in the eighth, before the Brakettes left the Chill on the field with a run with two outs in the ninth.

Lauren Pitney led off the ninth inning with a base hit, her third safety of the game. Sam Rodriguez sacrificed Pitney over to second, conceding the second out. Britt Lampert reached on an infield single to the right side, and Pitney raced around third on the play, never slowing down on her way home with the winning run. Pitney slid headfirst and wide to the right side of the plate to avoid the tag, and reached back with her left hand to touch the plate to secure the 3-2 win.

Denis and Lampert each had two hits in the first game for the Brakettes.

The Chill again jumped ahead in the first inning of the nightcap, after Rachel Jacavage was hit by a pitch with one out. A wild pitch and a passed ball sent Jacavage to third base, and she sprinted home on a single by Gordon to give Maryland a 1-0 lead.

The Brakettes quickly responded, as Suto again started a rally with an infield single. Suto stole second and moved to third on a base hit by Kane, who took second on the throw. Suto scored to tie it up on a passed ball, which also sent Kane to third. With one away, Duffner grounded out to the right side, and Kane raced across to give Stratford the 2-1 edge.

Maryland picked up three hits in the third to produce the tying run. Jacavage reached on an infield single with one out and stole second. Holquist lined a single to right to push Jacavage to third, and a hard-hit single by Reilly Vicendese to left scored Jacavage to make it a 2-2 game.

Kane helped to manufacture a run in the third, when she picked up a base hit and stole second. Kane came home to score on an error, giving Stratford a 3-2 lead.

Pitney walked with one out in the fourth, and Gabby Laccona singled to move Pitney to second. Casey Harding followed and lofted a double to center to plate Pitney for a 4-2 advantage.

The Chill fought back yet again in the fifth, and Gordon was again in the middle of it all. Gordon had a hit and an RBI in each game, and earned a base on balls with one out to start things off. Vicendese roped a double to right, scoring Gordon and narrowing the gap to 4-3.

The Brakettes put the game out of reach in the sixth with a pair of runs, giving starter Brandice Balschmiter some insurance runs.

Suto reached on a bunt single to spark the rally, and advanced to second on a groundout. Denis reached on another Chill defensive miscue, which also sent Suto home to extend the lead. Denis stole second and then came across on a double to the fence in right by Duffner, closing out the scoring at 6-3.

Balschmiter (8-1) went the distance and earned the win, striking out 12 in the contest.

The Brakettes and Maryland Chill will return to action with another doubleheader on Saturday night at DeLuca Hall of Fame Field in Stratford, CT. Game time is 7:00.
