Sunday Morning
Brakettes Close out Weekend with Shutout of Chill

Alex Heinen receives throw from 3B Jolie Duffner to get the Chill's Dani Goodman in third inning Sunday.
July 9 - The Stratford Brakettes extended their winning streak to 16 games on Sunday morning with a 7-0 shutout of the Maryland Chill. Lauren Pitney and Alex Heinen blasted home runs for the local favorites, as they closed out a five-game sweep of their mid-Atlantic counterparts.

Kari Marks won her second game in as many starts for the Brakettes, throwing the first four innings and striking out three. She surrendered just one single along the way. Kaysee Talcik pitched the last three innings to earn the save and struck out six.

Lauren Pitney singled to start the second and advanced a bag on a sac bunt by Casey Harding. Megan Hodgdon picked up a base hit to drive in Pitney for a 1-0 lead.

Theresa Kane walked to start the third, but was forced out on a grounder by Denis. After reaching on the fielder's choice, Denis stole second, and Jolie Duffner walked.

With two outs in the inning, Pitney clobbered her sixth home run of the year (photo), a three-run shot to make it a 4-0 contest.

Leading off the Brakettes fourth, Gabby Laccona doubled to left. Two outs later Theresa Kane singled to center, driving in Laccona with the Brakettes fifth run.

The Brakettes tacked on another two runs in the home fifth, after Duffner led off with a single to right field. Heinen followed and slugged her team-leading tenth home run of the season to left, closing out the scoring at 7-0.

Due to the long road home to Maryland for the Chill, the teams agreed to the lone matchup Sunday after doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday nights. The Chill led both games on Friday night, before the Brakettes stormed back to take both decisions.

The Brakettes will return to action on Thursday night at DeLuca Field with a 7:00 twinbill against the Cheshire Wildcats.
