Laccona, Denis Power Brakettes in 9-1, 8-0 Walkoff Wins v. Cheshire Wildcats

July 13 - by Ilan Woll - With the Brakettes riding a 16 game win streak, and the Battle of the Sexes game with the New Britain Bees upcoming, the challenge of a very talented 18U gold team awaited as the Cheshire Wildcats, with several Cheshire High School students on their roster, coming to play the home team. Kaysee Talcik took the circle to face Mikayla Stolar.

Val Suto led things off for Stratford with an infield hit and reached third thanks to a Theresa Kane slap single. After a wild pitch scored a run, Denise Denis doubled past the centerfielder to score the Brakettes second run.

For the second, Gabby Laccona and Megan Hodgdon both singled. Suto then beat out a slap to load the bases. Two of those runs came in as Kane put a ball up the middle for a hit. Alex Heinen then doubled to the gap, scoring two more for the six run lead.

Briana Marcelino reached on an error in the third, with Ivy Santos coming out of the bullpen to slow the Brakettes. However a sacrifice fly by Hodgdon provided a seventh run and put the Brakettes on the verge of a run rule victory.

Ivy Santos then kept the Brakettes off the board for the next two frames, allowing only one runner from a throwing error.

Kaysee Talcik meanwhile, was perfect for five innings, striking out the first eight batters as part of her thirteen total.

Cheshire developed some offense in the sixth as Caitlin Ranciato walked and advanced on a Lizzy D'Orio single. Jade Barnes then put the ball under the fence for the Wildcats first and only run.

Suto then started the Brakettes off with a walk and Kane followed suit. Denis then smashed a ball to centerfield. At first it was ruled a home run by the base umpire, but the home plate umpire determined it went through the fence for a ground rule double. A sacrifice fly by Jolie Duffner then scored Kane for the 9-1 win.

Kaysee Talcik (8-0) allowed only two hits and one walk (all in the sixth) against her thirteen strikeouts.

Val Suto, Theresa Kane, and Denise Denis each had two hit games, with Denis's both being doubles.

For game two, Nicole Williams represented the home team facing Anna Kerwood.

The Wildcats threatened in the first as Mia Jiudaitis slapped a bunt single, but was ruled to have left the batters box and called out. Brianna Floyd then singled and reached second before Nicole Williams struck out the final two batters. Similarly, the Brakettes threatened, as Val Suto's infield hit, a sacrifice bunt by Theresa Kane, and a line single by Denise Denis were held off the board as Cheshire's defense stiffened.

In the second, Lauren Pitney walked. Briana Marcelino then singled. Gabby Laccona bunted them into scoring position, setting up a hard single up the middle to score Pitney, with a bobbled ball scoring Marcelino for the two run edge.

Jolie Duffner, Alex Heinen, and Lauren Pitney all singled to load the bases with no outs in the third. After a force out, Gabby Laccona launched her first home run of the year (photo) to left field for a grand slam and a six run lead.

Ivy Santos came back out in relief, but in the fourth, Denis made up for the game one hard double, by plastering the ball into centerfield and over the fence for her sixth homer of the season and the seventh run for Stratford.

After Santos retired the next six batters, Theresa Kane singled in the sixth, taking second very quickly. She then reached third on a wild pitch. A walk put Denis on as Duffner provided her second run rule walk off appearance of the day, this time singling to center, scoring Kane for the win.

Nicole Williams notched her second win of the year, striking out nine against three singles and one walk. Brianna Floyd had two hits for the Wildcats, while Val Suto, Theresa Kane, Denise Denis, Jolie Duffner, and Briana Marcelino each provided a pair for the Brakettes.

The Brakettes return Friday to play the Connecticut Eliminators at 7pm, with the Polar Crush coming in on Saturday at 6:30pm. Sunday, the Battle of the Sexes returns, with the Brakettes traveling inland to face the New Britain Bees at 7:05pm. All games will be broadcast on Brakettes.com
