Eliminators Manage Split with Brakettes

July 14 - The Connecticut Eliminators took the first game of a doubleheader Friday night from the Stratford Brakettes, 4-1, before the home favorites grabbed the nightcap, 7-0, at DeLuca Field. Kaysee Talcik struck out ten in the late game to lead the Brakettes to the win.

Morgan Perry picked up the win for the Eliminators, while limiting the Brakettes to six singles in the complete-game performance. She struck out four and walked one.

Brandice Balschmiter (8-2) went the distance for the Brakettes and took the loss, as she gave up nine hits and walked two. Balschmiter struck out nine in the game.

Tiff Mangiamelli doubled to start the early game and scored on a single to right by Kat Stackrow for a 1-0 Connecticut edge. Stackrow made it to third on a pair of errors in right on the play, and scored on a double by Madeira Alexander for a 2-0 lead. Riley Pickett singled to left, before Allie Wheeler drove in Alexander with a base hit up the middle.

The Eliminators' 3-0 advantage stood until the fourth, when the Brakettes tried to mount a comeback.

Denise Denis led off and earned a walk, then stole second base. She advanced to third on a groundout and came home on a single by Alex Heinen. The tally made it 3-1, but the next two batters were retired in order.

Lea Thompson singled to start the top of the sixth, and moved to third on a pair of sac bunts by Gabby Leary and Perry. Mangiamelli came through with a double, driving in Thompson to extend the margin to 4-1.

The Brakettes put two on the home seventh, but Perry held firm and closed out the victory for the Eliminators.

Val Suto and Alex Heinen each had two hits for the Brakettes in defeat.

Suto got the Brakettes started quickly in the late game, as she led off with a bunt single. Theresa Kane followed and also reached on an infield single. With two outs, Heinen picked up a base hit to score Suto, putting Stratford up, 1-0.

Gabby Laccona collected a base hit in the bottom of the second and moved up a bag on a sacrifice by Sam Rodriguez. Laccona advanced to third on a wild pitch, before Heather Holly earned a walk and stole second. Laccona scored on a groundball out by Suto, stretching the lead to 2-0. Holly moved to third on the throw and scored on a single by Kane for a 3-0 advantage. Denis then singled, and Jolie Duffner walked, loading the bases. Heinen drew a walk to push Kane across for a 4-0 score.

Laccona helped to manufacture a run in the fourth, when she singled to right and moved up on an error. Laccona stole third base and came home on another groundout by Suto to balloon the lead to 5-0.

Rodriguez kicked off another scoring opportunity for Stratford in the fifth with a double to deep center. Holly followed with a walk, and Suto reached on an infield single to load the bases. Duffner delivered a single to drive in Rodriguez to make it 6-0.

Laccona picked up her third single of the game in the sixth, and soon after scored her third run. She reached second on a groundout and came home on a fielding error to close out the scoring at 7-0.

Talcik allowed just two singles in the second game on her way to improving to 9-0 on the season. She walked one and hit a batter.

Suto had three more hits in the late game to go along with two RBI. Kane also contributed two safeties.

The Brakettes will return to action on Saturday night with a 7:00 doubleheader against the Polar Crush (Worcester, MA) at DeLuca Hall of Fame Field in Stratford, CT.
