Thursday Night
Brakettes Soar Past Connecticut Seahawks

July 20 - The Stratford Brakettes notched a pair of wins against the Connecticut Seahawks on Thursday night at DeLuca Field, by 8-1 and 4-0 tallies. Briana Marcelino crushed two homers in the first game, while Denise Denis launched one long ball. Kaysee Talcik led Stratford to victory in the late matchup with 12 strikeouts, and Megan Hodgdon also went deep.

Nicole Williams (4-0) earned the victory for the Brakettes, striking out six and scattering four hits in a complete-game performance. She kept the Seahawks at bay until the top of the sixth.

The resilient Seahawks brought a strong legion of fans and fought hard as usual, with the early game going scoreless into the third. Sam Schiebe took the circle for Connecticut and struck out two Brakettes in defeat.

Jolie Duffner singled to left to start the home third and moved up on a base hit by Denis. Lauren Pitney drilled a double to center to score Duffner, putting the Brakettes up, 1-0.

Marcelino, who drilled a two-run homer in the Battle of the Sexes exhibition on Sunday, followed Pitney and hit her first official home run as a Brakette. The three-run blast made it a 4-0 game in a hurry.

Schiebe logged a scoreless fourth, before the Brakettes broke out the bats again in the fifth.

Denis led off the inning with her eighth dinger of the year and pushed the lead to 5-0. Pitney's second double of the night ensued, and Marcelino connected on her second homer of the night, stretching the margin to 7-0.

Alexa Bacoulis helped the Seahawks avoid the shutout, when she led off the sixth with a walk. She moved to second on a fielder's choice, and came home on a single by Carley Marchitto, cutting the deficit to 7-1.

Val Suto reached on a single in the sixth and moved up on a groundout. She sprinted across the plate after a pair of wild pitches, closing out the scoring at 8-1.

Denis had three hits in the contest, giving her 798 safeties for her career, third in Brakettes history. She went hitless in the nightcap, so #800 had to wait for at least one more night.

Alexa Milius had two base hits in the first contest, while Sophia Strazza also had a single for the Seahawks.

Talcik outdueled Olivia Vadas in the second game, although the Seahawks starter fanned five Brakettes in the loss. Talcik did not walk a batter and improved to 10-0 on the season with the four-hitter.

The Brakettes tallied single runs in each of the first four stanzas, with Suto again leading the way in the first with a leadoff, infield single.

Duffner followed and picked up the first of her three base hits of the matchup. With one out, Pitney singled to left to give Stratford an early 1-0 edge.

Hodgdon connected on her second home run of the year with one out in the second, extending the lead to 2-0 (photo).

Duffner singled to start the third and reached second on a walk by Denis. A passed ball allowed the runners to advance, and a sac fly by Pitney to centerfield plated Duffner for a 3-0 margin.

Sam Rodriguez led off the bottom of the fourth with a base hit and moved up on a single by Hodgdon. After a Suto single loaded the bases, Duffner drove in Rodriguez to give the Brakettes a 4-0 advantage.

Talcik had more than enough runs to work with, as she dominated the Seahawks throughout. The only frame in which she had two baserunners was the top of the fourth, when Sophia Strazza and Alexa Bacoulis both singled with two outs. Talcik induced a comebacker to retire the side.

Meaghan McFarland and Carley Marchitto each had base hits for Connecticut.

Suto had two hits for Stratford, while Heather Holly launched a double.

The Brakettes return to action on Friday night with a 7:00 doubleheader against the Connecticut Eliminators at DeLuca Hall of Fame Field in Stratford, CT. The Eliminators and Brakettes have split their last four contests this season.
