Brakettes Extinguish Stratford Fire Department, 5-0

July 22 - by Ilan Woll - A fundraiser for the Bridgeport Hospital Burn Ward brought fans from throughout Connecticut to celebrate the exhibition game between the home team and the Stratford Fire Department team.

Morgan Perry, on loan from the Eliminators, started the game for the Brakettes (photo) facing Brandice Balschmiter. All three pitchers (including Nicole Williams) and catchers (Heinen, Rodriguez, and Hodgdon) played for both teams. Denise Denis also played an inning at third base (photo).

After Perry struck out the side in the top of the first, Val Suto walked and stole second, then advanced on an infield hit by Theresa Kane. Jolie Duffner then lined to leftfield, scoring Suto. Alex Heinen singled in an additional run, making it 2-0.

The Brakettes added another run in the third as Kane singled and swiped second base. Denise Denis beat out an infield single. Duffner then singled to score Kane to gain a 3-0 lead.

Britt Lampert added some flash in the fourth with a triple into the leftfield corner and scored on a passed ball. Megan Hodgdon then demolished a pitch to left centerfield for a home run and the 5-0 lead.

The Fire Department's best opportunity came in the fifth as Mike Bruneau reached on an error. A fielder's choice put Tom Goodman on first as Scott Wooten drilled a hit through the fence in left field for a ground rule double. However, a strikeout ended that threat. Jacob Hall also had an opportunity, reaching on an infield hit and stealing both second and third (photo) before being stranded.

Overall, the three Brakettes pitchers struck out sixteen Fire Department hitters, allowing only two hits. They also struck out eight Brakettes hitters. Theresa Kane had three singles while Lauren Pitney added two.

This upcoming weekend the Brakettes are on the road with a double header on Friday v. the Allentown Patriettes at 7pm. Then to Lyons, PA for twin bills at 7pm Saturday and 10am Sunday with the Lyons Spirit. All games will be broadcast on Brakettes.com.
