Friday Night
Five Homers, Abramson's No-No Pace Brakettes

June 14 - The Stratford Brakettes improved to 10-1 with a pair of shutouts of Team Connecticut on Friday night in Stratford, CT, by 10-0 and 14-0 tallies. Abby Abramson threw the club's first no-hitter of the 2019 campaign in the late game, while the Brakettes slugged five home runs in the twinbill.

Kaycee Talcik struck out four and surrendered just two hits in the first game of the doubleheader, as she upped her record to 4-0 on the season.

Abby Abramson spun a masterful nightcap, as she fanned five and walked only one in the five-inning no-hitter. Abramson moved to 3-0 with the decision.

Val Suto led off the home first in the early game with an infield single and raced to second on a single to left by Emma Larke, who was one of four Junior Brakettes making their Straford Brakette debuts Friday night.

Denise Denis singled to right field, and Suto sprinted home for the 1-0 edge when the ball was bobbled. Denis was then caught stealing second, but Larke stole home to give Stratford a 2-0 lead. After Alex Heinen and Briana Marcelino drew back-to-back walks with two outs, Megan Hodgdon singled up the middle to stretch the margin to 3-0.

Alexa Milius helped to manufacture a run in the second, when she led off with a base hit to right in her first at-bat with the Stratford Brakettes. She moved up a bag on a bunt single by Suto, and reached third on a groundout. A wild pitch sent Milius home to extend the lead to 4-0.

The Brakettes put it out of reach in the bottom of the third, when they plated six more runs.

Jolie Duffner and Heinen each singled to put two on with no outs, when Marcelino crushed a two-run double to make it 6-0. After Hodgdon reached on a defensive miscue, Katie Sciglimpaglia singled home Duffner for another run with her first hit as a Stratford Brakette. With one out, Kaitlyn Flood, who was called up from the Junior Brakettes for the weekend, cranked a three-run homer to close out the scoring at 10-0.

Kim Saunders hurled a scoreless fourth inning for Team Connecticut, but their offense could not crack the scoreboard.

Talcik retired the side in order in the top of the fifth, securing the run-rule shortened victory for Stratford.

Reilly Paige and Amy Cavino contributed the lone base hits for Team Connecticut in the matchup.

The Brakettes scored early and often in the second contest, as they hung a five-spot on the board in the bottom of the first. Suto led off with a bunt single and stole second. Larke reached safely on an error, as Suto stayed put. Denis singled to left to drive in Suto to put Stratford ahead, 1-0. Duffner followed and nailed a three-run homer to left-center for a 4-0 advantage. Marcelino also connected with a solo shot, stretching the lead to 5-0.

Julia Handfield led off the second with a base hit and moved up on another safety by Suto. Denis roped a single to right to score Handfield, making it a 6-0 game. Duffner and Heinen responded with RBI singles of their own, bringing the score to 8-0.

Lauren Pitney came up with two outs and crushed a three-run shot, extending the margin to 11-0.

After Emily Stone worked a scoreless third inning for Team Connecticut, Stratford scored three more times in the fourth.

Heinen smacked a solo shot with one out in the bottom of the fourth, giving the Brakettes a 12-0 advantage. Marcelino kept the momentum going with a single, and went to second on a walk by Pitney. Milius came up and lined a double to score Marcelino from second. Pitney went to third on the play and tagged up on a sac fly by Sciglimpaglia for the final 14-0 ledger.

The Brakettes have now won 10 straight contests after dropping the season opener to the Junior Brakettes on June 1st.

Stratford will return to action Saturday night at DeLuca Hall of Fame Field to take on the Tanner (MA) Pride in a 7:00 doubleheader. All 2019 Brakettes games will be live video webcast on www.brakettes.com.
