Saturday Night
Brakettes Experience Power Surge Against Maryland Chill
June 30 by Jeff Glazer The Stratford Brakettes continued their hot streak Saturday night with another doubleheader sweep against the Maryland Chill, by scores of 11-0 and 8-0 at Frank DeLuca Hall of Fame Field. Denise Denis also tied all-time great Joan Joyces record for most career doubles in a Brakettes uniform, 153 (photo).
Raeanne Geffert (2-1) took the mound for Game One, making quick work of the Chill hitters, allowing just three hits as she went the distance in a mercy rule-shortened, six-inning game. Geffert tallied up nine Ks in those six innings and never allowed a runner to get past second base.
The Brakettes bats stayed hot behind Geffert, amassing five home runs in Game One. Denise Denis put the Brakettes up early with a solo shot (4, 132 career) in the first and they never looked back. Another solo shot by Gambino (1) extended the lead in the second before Alex Heinen blew the game open with a two-run shot (4) in the fourth.
After an hour-long lightning delay, the two teams got back onto the field. Denis would hit her second homer (5, 133) of the night in the fifth, this one driving in two.
In the home sixth, Kaitlyn Flood ended it with a huge Grand Slam (2), putting the Brakettes up 11-0 with the game being called due to the mercy rule.
In Game Two, Ali DuBois (4-0) was tasked with the mission of following up Gefferts complete-game shutout. She rose to that challenge and kept the Chills bats on ice. DuBois allowed just one hit as she also blanked the Chill in a mercy rule-shortened, five-inning game. She also piled up eight strikeouts during the course of her outing, using a devastating off-speed pitch for many.
The power surge continued on the Brakettes side of things with a two-run bomb off the bat of Lauren Pitney (4) in the second inning. Jolie Duffner would then knock in two more in the third with a two-run double.
Denise Denis came into the game just one double shy of the Joan Joyce's all-time Brakettes career record of 153. She tied the mark with a line drive into right-center field with the bases loaded, knocking in two (photo). Denis had two homers, a double, and five RBIs on the day.
Jolie Duffner would follow up Denis with a two-run single for her fourth RBI of the game, making it 8-0 to close out the contest.
The Brakettes will play the final game of the series against the Chill on Sunday at 12 noon, where theyll look to sweep the five game set. The Maryland Chill will take on the Junior Brakettes at 10 am Sunday, also at DeLuca Field.
Both of Sundays games will be live video webcast at brakettes.com. |
