Friday Night
Brakettes Start 4th of July Weekend with Fireworks, Sweep Doubleheader vs Junior Brakettes

July 6 –by Jeff Glazer The Stratford Brakettes won both of their matchups against the Junior Brakettes on Friday night at Frank DeLuca Hall of Fame Field by scores of 6-0 and 13-4. Briana Marcelino finished the day with nine RBIs over the two games, including two home runs. Denise Denis also became the all-time Brakettes leader in doubles with 154, passing Joan Joyce.

The first game of the doubleheader was dubbed ‘The Battle of the Gefferts.’ Raeanne Geffert (3-1) took the mound for the Brakettes whilst her younger sister Jenna stepped up for the Juniors. Raeanna would get the better of the inaugural instance of this matchup, pitching seven scoreless frames, striking out eight.

The first inning started with a bang as with two away, the Brakettes pushed a run across via an Alex Heinen RBI single. Then, with two runners on, Briana Marcelino stepped in. Her first home run on the day was a no-doubter off the bat and put the Brakettes out to a 4-0 early lead that they would not look back from. Jolie Duffner added an RBI single in the fifth and Marcelino added another, walking with the bases loaded.

Raeanne Geffert would remain in the game to close out her gem of a performance, going the distance and keeping the Juniors off the scoreboard. The Juniors were able to amass six hits against Raeanne, but were unable to string them together, stranding seven runners in Game One.

In Game Two, Kaycee Talcik got the call to go up against Sarah Lawton. Talcik pitched three no-hit innings, looking aggressive in her approach. This was more than enough time for the Brakettes to hop out to a big early lead.

Again, with two away in the first, Alex Heinen got the job done. A three-run homer (5) to dead center got her team off the ground early. Lauren Pitney led the second off with a solo shot (5) down the right field line. After four errors in the inning loaded the bases for Marcelino, she blew the game open with a three-run double into the gap. Pitney added another in the inning, driving in Marcelino with a double of her own.

An RBI single for Jolie Duffner and a second homer for Marcelino (4) added some insurance to the Brakette lead in the fourth.

Things would start to go awry for Talcik in the fourth. Four straight hits for the Juniors allowed two runs to score, and three straight hits to lead off the fifth helped another two cross the plate. Talcik was able to bunker down and get through the rest of the game, with the Brakettes taking another game against the Juniors, this one by the score of 13-4.

Next up for the Brakettes (24-1), a doubleheader on Saturday night against the New England Diamond Gems, starting at 7pm at Frank DeLuca Hall of Fame Field. For the Junior Brakettes (14-8), their weekend games were postponed due to field conflicts. They’ll return to action Wednesday on the road against Team Connecticut in a doubleheader in Westport.
