Saturday Night
Brakettes Take Opening Game vs Diamond Gems, DuBois Flawless on the Mound

July 7 –by Jeff Glazer The Stratford Brakettes opened their series vs the New England Diamond Gems with a win by a score of 5-0 at Frank DeLuca Hall of Fame Field on Saturday. Ali DuBois threw a complete game shutout, allowing just two infield singles along the way. Briana Marcelino continued the tear she’s currently on with a Grand Slam in the sixth.

DuBois attacked the Diamond Gem hitters early and often, working very quick innings. She threw just six pitches in the second inning and only four to close out the game in the seventh. DuBois was able to rack up four K’s on the night but was particularly efficient in dispatching the Diamond Gems hitters with ground balls. Of the 21 outs recorded, 14 of them came on the ground. It was a busy night for the Brakettes infield and they were up to the task, keeping the Diamond Gems off the scoreboard.

The Brakettes went up against Morgan Hartranft and got to her early. After two straight singles by Britt Younan and Denise Denis, Hartranft airmailed her catcher twice in a row, allowing Younan to score.

However, the Brakettes were largely stymied by Hartranft. After allowing the opening run in the first, Hartranft would settle into the game, pitching five and a third straight scoreless innings.

However, the wheels fell off for Hartranft in the sixth. After a Val Suto single and a couple of walks issued to Denis and Alex Heinen, the bases were loaded for the red-hot Briana Marcelino. She continues to rake at the dish, hitting a line drive Grand Slam (5) over the right-center field fence to give the Brakettes some breathing room. Marcelino has now driven in 13 runs in her last three games. She also draws level with Heinen, Denis, and Lauren Pitney in homers as this year’s home run race should be very interesting.

DuBois had no problem shutting the door in the seventh and the Brakettes took this one by a score of 5-0. DuBois moves to 6-0 on the year and continues to pitch to a sub-one ERA.

Game Two was rained out.

The Brakettes (25-1) return to Frank DeLuca Field for another doubleheader with the Diamond Gems on Sunday, with Game One starting at 10:00am. Both games will be webcast live on Brakettes.com.
