Brakettes Open Weekend with Two Wins vs Cheshire Wildcats
July 12 by Jeff Glazer The Stratford Brakettes started their weekend by taking both games of a twin-bill against the Cheshire Wildcats by scores of 9-0 and 3-1. Alex Heinen and Gillian Birk both tallied three RBIs on the day while Becca Johnson managed to cross the plate four times over the two games.
Ali DuBois toed the bump in Game One and continued her recent dominance. The Torrington native blanked the Wildcats over five innings, allowing just three hits. She also managed to fan seven Wildcats hitters on her way to her seventh win of the year.
DuBois would have plenty of run support behind her with the Brakettes opening the scoring in the first. Denise Deniss sixth home run of the year, this one of the two-run variety, broke the deadlock early. Gillian Birk would follow up with a two RBI single of her own.
The Brakettes would pad their lead in the second following an RBI single by Alex Heinen and a sacrifice fly from Kaitlyn Flood.
DuBois would find herself in a spot of trouble in the third with runners on second and third and only one out. A line drive off the bat of leadoff hitter Peyton Davis would find its way straight into the glove of shortstop Jolie Duffner who doubled off the runner at third to end the threat.
The Brakettes would add three more after a wild pitch scored Becca Johnson and RBI singles from Heinen and Birk. DuBois would close the game out in the top of the fifth, giving the Brakettes the Game One win by a score of 9-1.
Kaysee Talcik was given the ball in Game Two. With the rain beginning to accumulate, both Talcik and Wildcats pitcher Erin Dighlio found it hard to maintain a grip on the ball. Talcik would find herself in many long at-bats, but still came out unscathed for the first three innings. However, in the fourth, the Wildcats would take the lead with an RBI double off the bat of Brooke Matyasovsky.
But, falling behind might have been just enough to spring the Brakettes bats into action. An RBI single for Duffner and a sac fly from Heinen put the Brakettes out in front for the first time in the game.
Talcik worked a scoreless top of the fifth allowing Alexa Milius to step up in the home half of the inning and launch a solo shot to dead center to make it 3-1 in favor of the Brakettes.
That was all she wrote for Game Two as the rain proved to be too much, with stronger weather still on the horizon. Talcik moves to 10-0 on the year, another key piece of an extremely strong Brakettes pitching staff.
The team will be back on Friday with the first doubleheader against the Stripes and Strikes. First pitch will be around 7:00pm and both games will be livestreamed at Brakettes.com. |
