Friday Night
Brakettes Cross 30 Wins, take Two Games vs Stripes and Strikes
July 13 by Jeff Glazer The Stratford Brakettes managed to get past the Stripes and Strikes in two close games on Friday night at Frank DeLuca Hall of Fame field. The Brakettes survived late scares in both games, taking Game One 3-1 and Game Two 6-2.
Ali DuBois was given the ball for the second straight day to kick off the doubleheader. She got off to a great start, only allowing one run in her complete game outing. The Stripes and Strikes managed to amass some hits, but DuBois was more than capable of stranding the runners and limiting the damage done.
The Brakettes were able to hop into the lead with an RBI single in the first from Jolie Duffner, scoring Gretchen Bunovsky. The third inning rolled around with the Brakettes still holding a 1-0 lead. Bunovsky would double the lead with an RBI double over the right fielders head.
The Stripes and Strikes were able to get one back after an RBI single by Ali Keener in the top of the sixth but the run was quickly forgotten about after Alex Heinen collected an RBI single of her own.
DuBois found herself in a bit of a jam in the top of the seventh with runners on first and second and the go-ahead run at the plate. However, she managed to escape with the final out and the win. DuBois moves to 8-0 on the year.
The Brakettes gave the reins to Kaysee Talcik again in Game Two. Talcik was largely flawless on the day, striking out 10 on the night.
The game would move quite quickly, with neither team getting into the run column until the fourth inning. However, in the top of the fourth inning, the Stripes and Strikes would break the deadlock. After two straight singles, a shallow fly ball and some heads-up baserunning allowed runners to reach second and third with only one out. The rare safety squeeze was executed to perfection, and got the first run on the board.
The second run would cross the plate after another great show of baserunning. With runners on the corners and two away, the runner on first took off and stopped halfway. This allowed the runner on third to beat the throw home.
With a 2-0 deficit staring them in the face, the Brakettes had to act quickly. In the bottom of the fifth, they put runners on first and second, needing a clutch hit. Gabby Laccona would deliver with a line drive down the right field line, a two-run triple.
With a tie game in hand once again, the Brakettes found themselves in a position to take the lead in the bottom of the sixth. With one away and two runners on, Alex Heinen blew the game wide open. Her eighth home run of the year, good for the team lead, made it a 5-2 game. Lauren Pitney would follow up with her own homer (6), a solo shot that just cleared the right field fence. In just two innings the Brakettes erased a two run deficit and created a four run lead of their own.
However, things wouldnt end so easy. The Stripes and Strikes loaded the bases with two away, sending the tying run to the plate. Talcik would bear down and get the strikeout that she needed to tuck Game Two into the win column. She moves to 11-0 on the year.
The Brakettes take on the Stripes and Strikes again on Saturday night in another doubleheader starting at 7:00pm at Frank DeLuca Hall of Fame Field. Both games will be webcast on Brakettes.com.
