Brakettes Take Both Games in Quick Fashion on Saturday Night
July 21 by Jeff Glazer The Stratford Brakettes took both games in the Micki Stratton Round Robin Tournament on Saturday night by scores of 12-0 against the CT Eliminators 18+ team and 9-0 against the Polar Crush. The offense had no trouble staying hot and Ali DuBois and Raeanne Geffert cooled off both opponents' bats on a scorching hot day at Frank DeLuca Hall of Fame Field.
In a game that would be decided in just two and a half innings, Ali DuBois was as good as she could be. She faced all nine batters that the Eliminators sent to the plate in Game One and set them all down. DuBois moves to 10-0 on the year with the win.
It would take only two innings for the Brakettes to reach the three inning Mercy Rule that was instituted in tournament play. Briana Marcelino got the party started with a Grand Slam (7) in the first and followed it up with another, a two-run shot (8) in the second.
Denise Denis would drive in two of her own in the second before Alex Heinen emptied the loaded bases with a double. Lauren Pitney would cap off the game with a solo shot (7).
Game Two would take a little longer, but not by much. Raeanne Geffert picked up right where DuBois left off, throwing five hitless frames without allowing a run. Not much more needs to be said about the dominance of Brakettes pitching this year as this pitching staff continues to exceed expectations. Geffert struck out seven on her way to her fourth win of the year.
The offense would waste no time in Game Two. After an error brought home the first run of the game, Alex Heinen would promptly bring in three more. Her team-leading 11th homer of the year made it a 4-0 game in the first inning.
Another run would score in the fourth on another error, allowing Gabby Laccona to score.
With the game seemingly in hand, Lauren Pitney wrapped things up a little early in the bottom of the fifth. With the bases loaded, Pitney launched the outside pitch into deep right-center, clearing the outfield fence (8) and sending the Brakettes home happy.
On a day where the Brakettes score 21 runs in less than seven innings of total play, it can be hard to pick offensive standouts. Briana Marcelino finished the night 4-4 with two home runs, six RBIs and a walk, Alex Heinen drove in six of her own on the strength of a double and another homer and Lauren Pitney knocked in five with her two home runs.
The Brakettes will look to take their firepower into Sunday morning's game vs the CT Eliminators 23U squad in their final game in the Round Robin Tournament at 10:30am at Frank DeLuca Hall of Fame Field.
Also, the Brakettes will play the annual Battle of the Sexes game vs the New Britain Bees at New Britain Stadium at 7:00pm on Sunday night.
Both games will be webcast on Brakettes.com.
