Brakettes Survive Scare against Eliminators, Win All Three Games in Micki Stratton Round Robin
July 22 by Jeff Glazer The Stratford Brakettes just about managed to sneak past the U23 CT Eliminators on Sunday morning at Frank DeLuca Hall of Fame Field, winning 5-4 after the game reached the time limit in the sixth inning.
Abby Abramson was named as the starter for the game, coming in with a spotless 5-0 record. The Eliminators would threaten in the top of the first, but strand two runners in scoring position as Abramson managed to work two quick outs. However, a leadoff walk issued to Julie Slavin and a double by Sarah Ratcliffe put a runner on third. A passed ball allowed the away side to take an early 1-0 lead.
A game that would be a great example of a tennis match was just getting started. If the Eliminators started the game with a serve, the Brakettes would return it in the bottom of the third. After a one-out single by Theresa Kane, a double by Adriana Gambino moved her to third but an error would advance both of them. A sacrifice groundout to third by Jolie Duffner got the Brakettes into the lead, 2-1.
The Eliminators would not simply roll over in this one. In the top of the fourth, with two runners on and two away, Riley Pickett drove everyone home. She came up clutch for her team with a three-run home run, making it a 4-2 game.
All of a sudden, the Brakettes had their backs against the wall. Due to tournament rules, a time limit of one hour and 30 minutes was imposed for every game throughout. As such, the team not only had to find a way to get back into the lead, but they had to do so quickly. Ali DuBois came in to relieve Abramson and worked a 1-2-3 top of the fifth, giving the Brakettes a chance in the home half.
Gabby Laccona led things off with a single and Julia Hanfield pushed her over to second with a bunt. After a Val Suto bunt single, an error behind the plate allowed Laccona to cross the plate and advance Suto to third. Theresa Kane would tie things up with an RBI single in the next at-bat. Then, Adriana Gambino stepped up one last time, shooting a double into right field and scoring Theresa Kane, giving the Brakettes a 5-4 lead in the embers of this one.
DuBois worked another 1-2-3 inning in the top of the sixth and the game was called there due to the time limit, the Brakettes surviving a late scare at home. DuBois records her 11th win of the year. The Brakettes move to 40-1 on the season.
