BRAKETTES TEAMS GO 2-0 IN CORNFIELD CLASSIC TO EARN BYES

June 12 - LYONS, PA - The Stratford and Junior Brakettes softball teams are on a collision course to the finals in the Cornfield Classic after both won a pair of games Saturday.

Early morning rain shortened the pool play portion of the tournament to two games and four teams compiled perfect 2-0 records. Manager John Stratton's 6-0 Stratford Brakettes allowed only one run to earn the top seed, while Coach Mary Sciglimpaglia's Junior Brakettes allowed two to take the second seed. Both earned byes in Sunday's single-elimination. Nook Gold also allowed just three runs, but Junior Brakettes won the tie-breaker on runs scored 9-8. Lyons Spirit was fourth.

Both the Junior Brakettes (4-2) and Stratford Brakettes play semi-final games at 11:30 a.m. against the winners of the 8 a.m. contests. The championship is set for 1:15 p.m..

Outstanding pitching by Ali DuBois (3-0) and Sarah Lawton (2-0) led the Stratford Brakettes to a 3-1 win over Stripes & Strikes and a 9-0, five-inning run rule of the Maryland Heat, respectively.

DuBois allowed a first-inning run in pitching a one-hitter with 11 strikeouts. She retired the last 16 hitters she faced. Jana Sanden's triple and singles by Kaitlyn Flood and Jessica Burlingame drove in the runs against S& S.

Lawton struck out 10 and scattered three hits to defeat the Heat while the Brakettes lashed out nine hits.

Sophia DiCocco hurled a complete game shutout in a 4-0 win over Pegasus, while Ali Blanchard and Sam Schiebe (1-0) combined for a 5-3 victory over the Outlaws.
