STRATFORD BRAKETTES RALLY TO CAPTURE CORNFIELD CLASSIC

June 13 - LYONS, PA - The Stratford Brakettes rallied from a 2-0 deficit to capture the championship of the annual Cornfield Classic with a 4-2 win over Nook 23U at the Lyons Firehouse diamond Sunday afternoon.

The final was a rematch of the 2019 title matchup in which the Brakettes prevailed 10-0. The anticipated championship game between Brakettes teams didn't materialize as the Nook shut out the Junior Brakettes (4-3) in the semi-final by 3-0. The Brakettes are now 8-0 and carry a 26-game win streak over the past two years.

Four straight ground ball singles up the middle gave the Nook a 2-0 first inning lead. The Brakettes cut the deficit in half on Jana Sanden's RBI double in the home first before taking the lead for good in the fourth. Gillian Birk tripled and Charlee Horton drove her in with a triple to tie the score. Emma Larke delivered Horton with a single. Kristin Acocella brought home an insurance run in the fifth. Sarah Lawton (3-0) held the Nook scoreless after the first inning

Manager John Stratton's club advanced to the finals with a 9-0, five-inning run rule victory over the Maryland Heat. Ali DuBois allowed one hit and allowed only two baserunners, while Sanden had a double and triple and two RBI.Katie Sciglimpaglia and Acocella both had two RBI, and Jessica Burlingame one. Lauren Rende and Lea White also had hits.

The Brakettes return to action Monday night to play the CT Seahawks in a 7 p.m. doubleheader at Frank DeLuca Hall of Fame Field.
