WMS Rain Shortened, Brakettes Crowned Champions

Aug 8 - By Connor Pignatello - The final day of the WMS national championship was cut short today due to persistent rain and a wet field. The Brakettes, as the tournament’s only undefeated team, were named champions for the 11th time in the tournament’s 13 year history. Stratford advanced to the final last night with a win over the Select Brakettes.

In their inaugural year, the Select Brakettes finished in second place. The Pennsylvania Stripes and Strikes took third and the Connecticut Impact secured fourth.

“It’s a shame,” said Brakettes general manager Bob Baird. “Everyone wanted to play the games, I feel bad for the girls on all the teams…. You don’t want someone to get hurt, because safety is the first thing.”

Three games were scheduled for Sunday’s action, but due to the rain, only the first game was played. In the loser’s bracket semifinal between the Stripes and Strikes and the Connecticut Impact, play was delayed by nearly two hours to begin with. After the two teams finally began to play, the game was delayed once again in the third inning for almost two hours. The Stripes and Strikes beat the Impact 8-2, with the big hits being back-to-back homeruns by Kristi DeMeo and Rachel Humbertus in the fifth inning. Stripes and Strikes pitcher Mea Concentino went the distance, giving up only two hits.

The loser’s bracket final between the Stripes and Strikes and the Select Brakettes, and the tournament final against the Brakettes were both cancelled, as the field was ruled unplayable and the drizzle continued.

Stratford ends its 75th season with a 41-2 record and wins in the WMS national tournament and the Cornfield Classic. This is the third consecutive season the Brakettes have finished with two or fewer losses.

“[WMS] comes with great anticipation and it goes so fast -- once it starts it’s over… now we have to wait another ten months for softball,” Baird said.
