Spirit Top Seahawks 3-2 to Play Another Day in WMS Championship

Saturday, August 10, Game 12 - The Lyons Spirit (PA) defeated the Stratford Seahawks (CT) on Saturday night at DeLuca Field in the WMS Losers Bracket Semifinal, holding on for a 3-2 decision. The win moved the Spirit into Sunday’s Winners Bracket Final against the Connecticut Charmers.

The loss sent the Seahawks home with a fourth-place finish in the 2013 WMS National Championship.

Liz Gall took the circle for Lyons and threw a complete-game, three-hitter to earn the win. She struck out nine and did not allow a hit until the fourth inning.

Alyson Chiaramonte, who won the 2009 WMS Joan Joyce Award as the tournament’s Most Outstanding Pitcher, took the loss for the Seahawks. She scattered eight hits over six frames, but fell behind early in the elimination game.

Karen Bauer led off the home first for the Spirit with a walk and moved to second on a sac bunt by Elaine Bedell (photo). Bauer advanced to third on a single by Gall, who then took second on defensive indifference. Bauer was driven in by Sarah Maulorico on a single to left for an early 1-0 edge.

Danielle Thacker started off the second inning with a single and went to second on a wild pitch. After a groundout moved her to third, Thacker came home on an RBI single to center by Bauer for a 2-0 lead. Bauer also later scored in the inning to push the lead to 3-0, after Elaine Bedell singled to center and the throw to third sailed away from the bag.

The Seahawks made it close in the top of the fourth, when they finally broke through against Gall.

After a leadoff walk by Wendi Westmark, Bri West picked up the first hit for Stratford with one out. The single pushed Westmark to second and put two on for Shannon Skeggs. A wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position, before Skeggs earned a walk to load the bases.

Kim Procida came through for the Seahawks, delivering a two-run single to pull them within 3-2. Gall struck out the next batter to end the threat, and the Seahawks could never come up with the tying run.

Bedell gave Gall some support with her glove in the fifth, as she robbed CJ Semones of a would-be extra-base hit. Semones lined a shot to shallow center, slightly to the right-field side. Bedell made a sliding grab to the hard-hit liner for the inning’s first out.

Gall went on to retire the side in order, and did so again in the sixth inning. She allowed just a seventh-inning single to Katie Flynn the rest of the way in securing the victory for the Lyons Spirit.

Bauer also doubled for the Spirit and accounted for all three Lyons tallies, scoring twice and driving in the other run.

The Seahawks finished the 2013 WMS National Championship with a 2-2 record in double-elimination bracket play. They also went 2-0 in pool play on Thursday.
