Lyons Spirit Narrowly Defeat Nook Gold, One Game Away from a Championship Berth

Aug 5 – by Jeff Glazer In what has been a massively entertaining tournament thus far, the Lyons Spirit just about do enough to get past a very tough Nook Gold team and will play in the Loser's Bracket Final with a spot in the WMS Championship Game on the line.

It would not take long for the scoring to get underway in this one, but the first runs of the game were scored by Nook Gold. In the bottom of the second, Lauren Lichtenwalner led off with a solo home run against veteran Spirit pitcher Liz Gall. Fast-forwarding just an inning, the Nook would get another off the bat of Hanna Garber, singling in her sister Julz.

With the Spirit already trailing 2-0, they would need a pick-me-up quickly, and they would get one. Karen Bauer, who has been so good defensively in this tournament, showed off the pop in her bat. A leadoff solo shot of her own cut the deficit in half.

However, it was the top of the fifth that would get the Spirit over the line. A huge two-run double from Liz Parkins brought Lauren Conroy and Kaitlyn Caleen home who had both singled to start the inning. That double gave the Spirit a 3-2 lead but they would add an insurance run from a Monica Twardowski single later in the inning.

To the credit of Nook Gold, they fought until the very end, getting one back in the bottom of the fifth but they would not be able to get the crucial tying run home against Amanda Houck who came on in relief of Gall. Houck would close things out in a hotly contested game at Frank DeLuca Hall of Fame Field.

Just like that, the Lyons Spirit have advanced to the Loser's Bracket Final after winning three straight in the loser's bracket. If they can extend that to four straight, they'll play in their first WMS Championship Game.
