In 1948 the tag "All-Stars" was dropped and the ballclub assumed the name "Brakettes", which has been synonymous with softball excellence ever since. That season marked the first of many New England championships for the Brakettes.
Barbara Abernethy and Mary Primavera comprised the mound staff. The team won the National Girls' League Championship and entered their first National Tournament (in those days it was referred to as the World Tournament) in Portland, OR.
Despite home runs by Joan Wallace and Helen Yak, the Brakettes went 0-2, losing to Alexandria, VA, 5-2, and Des Moines, IA, 3-1, to finish with an 18-2 overall record. |
