Brakettes Win 1st Game; Rain Suspends 2nd
July 12, 2013 - The Stratford Brakettes improved to 37-0 on the season with an 8-0 victory over the Connecticut Falcons. Denise Denis had two hits, including a triple, and scored twice in the game. The second game was called after one inning with the Brakettes ahead 5-0. Sam Greiner earned the win with the five-inning shutout. She gave up just a one-out single in the fifth, but was otherwise perfect, striking out nine along the way. The Brakettes put up two runs in the first, as Ashley Waters reached on a fielders choice and scored on the triple by Denis. Steffi Call followed and drove in Denis with a base hit, giving the Brakettes a 2-0 edge. Stratford scored their other six runs in the third, with four base hits leading the charge. Waters and Denis recorded back-to-back singles, and Call walked to load the bases with no outs. Elise Fortier also worked a walk, sending Waters across with the third run. Mandie Fishback then delivered a single up the middle to plate Denis and Call, putting the Brakettes up 5-0. Fortier moved to second on the play and went to third on a walk by Shannon Doepking. Becca Carden came through with a sac fly to score Fortier for a 6-0 advantage, also advancing the other runners a base in the process. Mouse scored Fishback with an ifield single, and Doepking also scored to extend the margin to 8-0. Greiner gave up a single to Camdyn Morgillo with one out, but struck out three in the frame to close out the game. The Brakettes scored five runs in the first inning of the nightcap, but the game was suspended after the last out dur to increasingly strong rains. The Brakettes return to action Saturday night at DeLuca Field in Stratford with a 7:00 doubleheader against the Lyons (PA) Spirit.
