Wednesday Night
Marcelinos Five RBIs Powers Brakettes to 8-0 Win
Aug 4 - By Connor Pignatello - Briana Marcelino drove in five runs and the Brakettes beat the Connecticut Eliminators 18+ squad 8-0 in the first game of pool play in the Womens Major Softball National Tournament.
Marcelino showed no rust after not playing last weekend and went 3-3 with a two-run homer, a two-run single, and an RBI double.
After Katie Sciglimpaglia reached on an error in the first inning, Marcelino fouled off four consecutive pitches in a lengthy at-bat before launching an inside offering over the fence in left field. She retakes the team lead in home runs with nine.
I was getting a lot outside -- I was looking out -- but she left one inside and thats my favorite, so I went for it, said Marcelino.
Brakettes starter Sarah Lawton was also masterful. In five innings, she allowed just one hit -- a fifth inning infield single by Syndey Sanden -- Brakettes infielder Jana Sandens older sister. Lawton struck out eleven, including five in a row at one point.
In the fourth inning, the Brakettes scored three runs thanks to poor fielding by the Eliminators and ended the contest via run rule. Connecticut made three errors in the inning and misplayed back-to-back pop ups that led to runs.
