BRAKETTES RENAME GOLF TOURNEY TO HONOR MEMORY OF PITCHING ICON JOAN JOYCE

Apr 1 - The Stratford Brakettes have announced that their fund-raising golf tournament, which featured pitching icon Joan Joyce who passed away suddenly March 26, has been renamed in her honor.

"It will now be known as the Joan Joyce Memorial 'Pitch and Putt' Golf Tournament," announced Brakettes Softball General Manager Bob Baird.“Joan was such an important part of our tournament the first four years. This way she will be remembered every year we conduct the event.”

The tournament will be staged on Saturday, June 25, 2022, at the Short Beach Par-3 Golf Course, located one-half mile from Frank DeLuca Hall of Fame Field where the Stratford Brakettes have played since 1988.

A native of Waterbury, CT, she played 17 years for the Raybestos Brakettes and was a 15-time ASA All-America with the Brakettes. She was the first and only head softball coach at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, FL, until her passing. In her 28-year career at FAU, she led the Owls to 12 conference titles.

In addition to her illustrious softball career with Raybestos, and later with the four-time champion Connecticut Falcons of the International Women's Professional Softball Association, Joan was a 19-year member of the Ladies Professional Golf Tour (LPGA). She is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records for the lowest number of putts (17) in a single round for both men and women golfers.

The tournament is a Four-Person Scramble, Shot Gun format with three flights scheduled for 8 and 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. Every year the tournament has been sold out.

Awards are presented to the winning team in each flight and to the lowest scoring women's foursome in the tournament. Breakfast and buffet lunch are included and there are raffles and giveaways.

“Joan always enjoyed attending and speaking with each golfer. I can't think of a better way to honor her memory than playing in the golf tournament, where all proceeds go directly to the operating expenses of the three teams in the Brakettes organization,” said long-time friend and Stratford Brakettes Manager John Stratton.

The fee is $220 per foursome or $60 per player registering by themselves. For additional information, or to make reservations, contact Baird at (203) 218-1066, or via e-mail at brakettesgm@gmail.com.

For details, directions, and to register by mail, download the Brochure/Application form.

June 19 is the entry deadline unless all three flights are filled earlier. July 9 is the rain date.
