Often called the Babe Ruth of softball, Joan Joyce was known to chat with every golfer each year at the Joan Joyce Pitch and Putt Golf Tournament, sharing stories from her Hall of Fame career, giving tips and posing for pictures. After Joans passing last March, the tournament was renamed in her memory.
The late great Brakettes General Manager Bob Baird said in 2022 before his own passing
"It will now forever be known as the Joan Joyce Memorial 'Pitch and Putt' Golf Tournament. Joan was such an important part of our tournament... This way she will be remembered every year we conduct the event.
Baird dreamed up the idea for the tournament in 2017 and named it after Joan Joyce with her blessing. It quickly became the Brakettes biggest fundraiser and an early-summer highlight.
A native of Waterbury, CT, Joan played 17 years for the Raybestos Brakettes and was a 15-time ASA All-America with the Brakettes. She was the first and only head softball coach at Florida Atlantic University until her passing in 2022. In her 28-year career at FAU, she led the Owls to 12 conference titles.
I can't think of a better way to honor her memory than playing in the golf tournament, where all proceeds go directly to the operating expenses of the Brakettes, said long-time Brakettes Manager John Stratton, who also coached with Joan at FAU.
Joan was also a 19-year member of the Ladies Professional Golf Tour (LPGA). She is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records for the lowest number of putts (17) in a single professional round for both men and women golfers. |
