Juniors and Brakettes Split Opener, Meet Again Saturday Night at DeLuca Field

June 3 -
The Junior Brakettes knocked off their senior counterparts in the season opener Friday night, racing to a 9-4 win that was fueled by a seven-run fifth inning. The Stratford Brakettes came back with a five-inning, run rule-shortened 10-0 victory in the nightcap.

Junior Brakette pitcher Emily Rerick (1-0) and Stratford Brakette starter Jackie Pengel traded scoreless innings for the first four stanzas, with Pengel striking out seven through four and allowing just one hit.

Some timely hitting and four walks, plus a Brakette error, gave the Juniors all the runs they would need in the top of the fifth.

Kassidy LaTour delivered a big two-run double to put the Junior Brakettes ahead, 2-0. Morgan Tainter and Gianna Carrano both contributed two-run singles to help blow it open.

The Brakettes fought back in the home fifth when Sophia DiCocco led off with a base hit. Kaitlyn Food drilled a two-run home run to cut the lead to 7-2, but the margin would remain the same headed to the sixth.

Sarah Falcone reached on a single for the Juniors in the sixth and eventually came home on a sac fly by Molly Lennon, stretching their lead to 8-2.

Stratford Brakette Mac Stone-Folmar crushed a two-run shot in the bottom of the sixth to narrow the gap to 8-4, but the Juniors scored again in the top of the seventh and held on for a 9-4 decision.

Sophie Garner-MacKinnon hurled a two-hit, eight-strikeout performance in the second contest, earning a decisive win in her debut with the Brakettes.

First-game starter Pengel offered up all the offense that was needed in the bottom of the second with a leadoff homer. The Brakettes scored three more in the inning, after a pair of singles by Kendall LaMorte and DiCocco set the table. An error allowed another run to score, and a two-run double by Stone-Folmar put Stratford up, 4-0.

The Brakettes scored four more in the third, putting the game away early. LaMorte picked up an RBI on a bases-loaded groundout, and Stone-Folmar again came through with a two-run single. An unearned run on an error made it 8-0 through three.

Stone-Folmar finished the night with seven RBI and five hits, including a home run and two doubles. Pengel finished with three hits and three runs in the late game.

Flood delivered her second home run in as many games in the fourth, a solo shot that stretched the margin to 9-0. LaMorte pitched in with an RBI single to close out the scoring at 10-0.

The Stratford Brakettes and Junior Brakettes will play again Saturday night, June 3rd at DeLuca Field. The doubleheader will start at 7:00 pm.
