Joan Joyce was known to make the rounds at the tournament to meet all the golfers and share her stories from the Brakettes and LPGA years. Late Brakettes GM Bob Baird initially dreamed up the 'Pitch and Putt' name to honor Joan and her many accomplishments in her two favorite sports. The event became a Memorial after she passed away in March 2022.
A native of Waterbury, CT, Joan played 17 years for the Raybestos Brakettes and was a 15-time ASA All-American with the team. She served as head softball coach at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, FL for 28 years, winning 12 conference titles. Joyce also coached the school's golf team for several years.
Retired Brakettes Hall of Fame Manager John Stratton coached with Joan at FAU, and he reflected on his great friend while promoting the 'Pitch and Putt'. There's no better way to honor Joan than playing golf and raising funds for the Brakettes.
All proceeds from the tournament go directly to the general operating costs of Brakettes Softball.
Joan Joyce was also a 19-year member of the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA). She is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records for the lowest number of putts (17) in a single professional round for both men and women golfers.
