Brakettes Top Firefighters

June 21 - The Stratford Brakettes defeated the Stratford Fire Department 2-1 Thursday night in their annual benefit game at DeLuca Hall of Fame Field, winning in dramatic, walk-off fashion with a manufactured run in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Retired Brakettes Manager and National USA Hall of Famer John Stratton watched on closely from the first row behind home plate as his granddaughter, McKenna Stratton, made her Brakettes debut. McKenna led off the bottom of the seventh with the teams knotted at 1-1 and dropped a bunt to the left side (photo). Stratton beat it out for a leadoff single, then raced to third on a one-out single by Kaitlyn Flood. Katie Sciglimpaglia sent Stratton home with a base hit of her own, setting off a Brakettes celebration in the dugout and at home plate.

There was a boisterous crowd in attendance that cheered excitedly for both sides and came together in a show of love and support for the family of Susan Brennan Parnoff, who passed away on March 25, 2024. The proceeds from the game’s admission tickets, 50/50 raffle, and sale of SBP Benefit shirts will be donated to the education fund of Susan’s daughter Elizabeth, who is a fifth grader at St. James School in Stratford.

After the Stratford FD took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning, Kylie Bulinski brought the Brakettes even with a solo shot in the home half of the fourth. The stalemate lasted into the seventh inning, with Brakettes starter Anna Gedacht working a 1-2-3 seventh to set the stage for the late drama. Gedacht struck out 14 Firefighters in a complete game showing, while allowing just two hits on the night.

Brakettes pitcher Nadia Andarowski started for the Stratford FD and navigated the troubling Brakettes lineup well, outside the one pitch to Buliski. She struck out two and scattered seven hits.

The Brakettes (6-0) head to Lyons, PA this weekend for the Arlan Schwoyer Honorary Tournament, and will play three round robin games on Saturday, with an eight-team, single-elimination bracket scheduled for Sunday.

Stratford will take on the Valley Warriors at 11:30, followed by the PA Krunch 23U at 3:00 and the Worth Prospects at 4:45.
