The 1961 tournament shifted back to the West Coast in Portland, OR, and it produced one of the most exciting and memorable moments in World Tournament history. Raybestos was denied a chance to become the first team to win four consecutive titles when the Whittier, CA, Gold Sox broke a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the 19th inning at 2:30 a.m. (PCT) to tally a 2-1 triumph.
Joan Joyce worked 32 consecutive innings on the final day and struck out 67 batters. In the finale against Whittier, the Brakettes stranded 18 base runners and out-hit the Gold Sox 9-5.
Joyce was outstanding with 40 strikeouts in the game. Raybestos had its string of 18 straight tournament wins snapped the opening night when Reading, PA, upset the Brakettes 2-1.
Raybestos ripped off eight straight victories to advance to the final game. They defeated Topeka, KS, 12-1; Adrian, MI, 3-0; Vancouver, 4-0; Redwood City, CA, 2-1, 9 innings; Pekin IL, 1-0; Portland, 1-0, 9 innings; Toronto, 3-0, 13 innings; and Whittier 2-0.
The loss to the Gold Sox snapped Joyce's streak of 36 straight wins over two years. Joyce, who was a first-team All-America, had perfect games against Vancouver and Pekin in the tournament.
Second baseman Millie Dixon, third baseman Marie Ottaviano, shortstop Beverly Mulonet and catcher Micki Macchietto were the other first-team selections.
The team compiled a 60-9 record. |
