ABBY OTA NAMED 2019-20 CONNECTICUT GATORADE SOFTBALL PLAYER OF THE YEAR
May 31, 2020 - Abby Ota now finds herself in some pretty impressive company after being named the 2019-20 Gatorade Connecticut Softball Player of the Year. The Joel Barlow High School junior is entering her second year on the Junior Brakettes.
Ota, the standout shortstop for Barlow, had a record-setting sophomore season in 2019 for the Falcons. She led Connecticut in hitting with a .725 batting average, going 58-for-80. The left-handed slapper and adept bunter, also has unbelievable speed with 60 stolen bases in 62 career attempts.
Ranked as the nation's No. 81 prospect in the Class of 2021 by Extra Inning Softball, she was first-team All-State for the 17-7 Falcons, who reached the CIAC Class M semi-finals.
With 105 career hits in two varsity seasons, Ota is within reach of the all-time Barlow hits record of 153, currently held by Kristen Acocella, a first-year outfielder with the Stratford Brakettes.
During her first year on the Junior Brakettes, the 5-foot-3 Ota hit .452, but didn't capture the team batting title because of too few at bats. She divided her summer schedule with the Georgia Impact Premier travel team on the national JO circuit. In last year's PGF Premier 18U Nationals she hit .500 and was named first-team All-America.
Ota is also a star player on the Barlow basketball team and she has a 3.11 GPA in the classroom
Other Brakettes to win the Connecticut award were Masuk High of Monroe pitching legend Rachele Fico, who captured both the 2009 and 2010 prize; another Panther pitcher Tatum Buckley (2014 and 2015), and current Stratford Brakettes hurler Abby Abramson of Cheshire High in 2017.
Cat Osterman , a member of the U.S.A. Olympic Team and a former Stratford Brakettes pitcher, won the Gatorade award in Texas in 2000 and 2001. Current Junior Brakettes pitcher/first baseman Ali Blanchard of North Providence, RI, was Rhode Island's 2019 Gatorade recipient.
Abby is the daughter of Sarah and Kevin Ota of Redding.
