Denis Dynamite as Brakettes Drop Blasters

July 07, 2007 - The Brakettes swept a doubleheader from the Allentown (PA) Maurer and Scott Blasters, Saturday night at DeLuca Field, by 7-1 and 9-0 margins. Denise Denis went 7-for-7 on the night, with a pair of home runs, while driving in three and scoring four times. The Brakettes launched six home runs on the night, as they improved to 33-0.

Brandice Balschmiter toed the rubber in the first game for the Brakettes, and improved to 17-0 on the season with the four-hit victory. Balschmiter struck out ten on the night, and did not allow a walk. Candice Freel threw an abbreviated no-hitter in the second contest, striking out four in five innings, while giving up a lone walk.

The Brakettes used a variety of depth charges in the early game to pace the offense. Denis nailed a one-out double in the home first to start the onslaught, and Mandie Fishback walked to put runners on first and second. Courtney Bures followed with a towering home run to left field to put the hometown favorites up 3-0. Killian Roessner moved the Brakettes out front 4-0 on a solo shot to left, immediately after Bures’ blast. The back-to-back homers gave Balschmiter a comfortable lead, and the Brakettes never looked back.

Shana Lalo led off the top of the sixth for the Blasters with a single, eventually coming home on a wild pitch. The run made the score 4-1, but the Blasters never drew any closer. Karen Bauer collected two hits for Allentown in the game.

Denis and Bures added singles in the fifth inning, with Denis scoring on Bures’ base hit to go up 5-0. Bures was plated on a single by Stephanie Hill to make it 6-0, and Candice Freel helped her fellow Brakette pitcher by blasting a home run to center in the sixth, closing out the scoring at 7-1.

Denis started the scoring in the late game, driving an opposite field homer to left-center in the first inning. Fishback followed with a single, and Bures drilled a double to left to put runners at second and third with one out. Hill walked to load the bases, and Jill Cimminello roped a double to score two runs and put the Brakettes up 3-0.

Denis added another solo shot in the second, as the Brakettes went up 4-0. After Hill led off the third with a single, Allison Twarowski nailed a long ball over the left field fence to go up 6-0. Freel scored on a wild pitch, and Sari-Jane Jenkins and Denis added RBI singles to round out the tally at 9-0.

The Brakettes return to action Sunday at noon, with two more games against the Blasters, at DeLuca HOF Field in Stratford.
