Brakettes Declared ASA National Champions As Rain Halts Tournament
August 7, 2007 - The Brakettes won their 28th National Championship Monday in South Bend, IN, Tuesday, although it is their first without a celebration on the field. The Brakettes, who went 2-0 in pool play, and won their only two games in bracket competition, were ruled to be the victors by virtue of allowing the fewest runs per game in the winners bracket. The Brakettes held a 2-0 lead over the California Sliders in the top of the fourth of the winners bracket final, when play was suspended Monday night. Lightning kept the game from being resumed Monday night, and the completion was scheduled for 10:00 a.m. Tuesday. Unfortunately, overnight thunderstorms and heavy rains left the fields unplayable, and the Brakettes took their fifth crown in six years. A complete tournament wrap-up and team picture will follow later Tuesday, as the team plans a celebratory dinner at 1:00 EDT. Stay tuned for more news from South Bend |
