Brakettes Blast Off Against Breakers

June 28, 2012 - The Stratford Brakettes quickly jumped out on the Stratford Breakers in both games Thursday night at DeLuca Field, posting 14-0 and 19-1 wins over the local 18-under club.

Kate Bowen got her first home start in the circle for the Brakettes, pitching five scoreless frames en route to her second victory. She allowed just one hit and did not walk a batter. Bowen also made a stellar diving catch coming in on popped-up bunt in the first inning.

Krissy Cullen managed the only hit off Bowen, a leadoff double in the second inning.

The Brakettes jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the home first. Becca Carden delivered a bases-clearing double for a 3-0 lead, and Jess Mouse extended the margin with an RBI single.

Ashley Waters contributed a two-run base hit in the second inning, and Stephanie Call also picked up an RBI on a single in the frame. The Brakettes scored another three runs on errors, closing out the second with a 10-0 lead.

Waters doubled and scored in the third for an 11-0 advantage, and Call scored her second run of the game after reaching on a single.

Call added the last two runs in the bottom of the fourth, as she smacked her fifth homer of the season, a two-run shot that also scored Denise Denis.

The Brakettes also cruised to a victory in the nightcap with the help of an eleven-run first inning.

Rachele Fico earned the win in the late game, striking out six, while scattering three hits and hitting one batter. The Breakers had two on in both the first and second innings, but couldn’t crack the scoreboard until they scored an unearned run in the fourth.

Waters and Carden stroked doubles in the inning, while Call and Jess Mouse came through with RBI singles. While fourteen batters came to the plate in the inning, the big blow came once again from Call.

With two outs and the bases loaded, Call launched her second home run of the night, which was also her second grand slam of the season. She drove in a total of five runs in the inning as the Brakettes built a commanding 11-0 lead.

Bowen doubled in the second inning and scored on a single by Radomski, putting the Brakettes up 12-0.

After a third inning, RBI double by Mandie Fishback stretched the lead to 13-0, Carden crushed her third homer of the year. The three-run shot put the Brakettes ahead, 16-0.

The Breakers picked up their lone run in the fourth, after Emily Norris reached on a rare fielding error by Fishback. Morris moved up a bag on a wild pitch and went to third on a single by Melissa Nelson.

After Nelson took off for second, Heronema rifled the ball to second base to try to throw Nelson out, but the base was left empty. The throwing error allowed Morris to head home to cut the deficit to 16-1.

Mariel Schlaefer closed out the scoring with a three-run home run in the fourth inning. The long ball was her first homer as a Brakette and pushed the margin to 19-1.

Brittany Lampert and Giuliana Darcangelo also picked up singles for the Breakers in the game.

The Brakettes improved to 22-0 on the season with the pair of wins. They return to action Friday night at 7:00 at DeLuca Field with a doubleheader against the CT Mirage.
